I cursed that it was Monday as I walked into the gates, trying to minimalize my headache caused by waking up so early. Surprisingly, I was actually looking forward to school though, which is the first time in... well...ever. It obviously had everything to do with the fact that Katie was now supposedly my friend, but I still wasn't sure if she'd do what Noah did and completely ignore me when everyone was looking.

I had Biology first, which I hurried to after tutor in which Mr Peters told us that we all HAD to go and sign up for the musical (he was the drama teacher and I had a feeling that it was undersubscribed this year due to the obscurity of the chosen musical). Let's just say that my name was NOT on the sign-up list and definitely wouldn't be any time soon, especially considering that Mackenzie was going for the female lead – she'd been bragging about if for forever. I don't want to sound nasty, but that could have also been a factor contributing to the lack of numbers, but I couldn't be sure.

She came in five minutes after me, swishing her newly dyed blonde hair for everyone to see. I gave a small smile when nobody noticed.

"NO, it's NOT the same Carrie!" She said to her friend, who was now had a slight pink tinge to her face, "It's HONEY blonde not BRONZE CREAMY blonde – see DIFFERENT SHADES!" I covered my mouth in an attempt to stop laughing – she was definitely on a war path alright. Katie gave me a smile behind her as she walked over slowly, also obviously trying not to laugh.

"No, it's QUEEN BEE not MEAN GIRL!" She whispered to me, shaking her head. I laughed as she sat down next to me and Mrs Williams stared at us from the front. I didn't dare look at her, but I could feel her gaze on me, focused probably on the fact that I was no longer on my own. Surely she saw last lesson?

"So how are you anyway?" Katie asked me as everyone was getting their books out. My books were already on the desk, a side effect of getting here so early.

Oh, I'm good I guess

"Ok you know what we need to talk about?" I gave her a questioning look "The English Coursework!"

Why?

"Because mine's a freakin' nightmare at the moment" I laughed "I'm not joking – all Connor cares about is the state of his hair!"

Wait, are we talking about the fact he runs his hand through it every five minutes?

"More like five seconds! Our desk was filled with dandruff by the end!" She shook her head "How's yours going?"

Ok I think – Noah's letting me do most of the work so that's ok

"Oh yeah I forgot you were partnered with Noah." She suddenly looked distant, probably thinking about something "Anyway, so yeah – it's safe to say that my English grade isn't going anywhere great at the moment!"

Which one are you doing?

"The story one – I can't even comprehend anything Shakespeare writes – it's about the sea or something I think"

You think?

"Connor, along with having an obsession with flipping his hair, decided that it was his project and so I'm leaving him to it for the most part. It's a bad idea I know but I can't be bothered to argue with him!"

Just then, Mackenzie turned around and gave us both the death glare that she gave anyone she hated. I had a feeling she thought it was really intimidating, but I found the sudden urge to laugh about how much effort went into making us know that she hated us.

"Oh, hello Mackenzie – sorry I didn't see you there!" Katie said sweetly, smiling about how the disgust on Mackenzie's face multiplied.

"NO I bet you didn't – have you dumped him yet or still clinging to the hope that he won't do it again?" Wow. She was really going for it, I could tell.

"So, the thing is Mackenzie, I'm pretty sure you declared that you weren't talking to me last lesson and also we're no longer friends so it's really not your business who I'm dating" She gave another faux smile "Goodbye!"

"Whatever losers" She muttered and turned back around.

Are you still going out with Dan?

"Yeah – I know it's stupid to stay with him after he did cheat on me, but I don't know, I still like him I guess and it's kind of annoying that Mackenzie thought that she ruled my life"

I get that

"yeah and it's like, when we hang out, we still have a good time, you know? And he did apologise about a million times and said he was drunk, which is understandable. I guess we all do stupid things when we drink too much alcohol." I couldn't relate, but I had a feeling she could.

XXX

Katie rushed quickly after the bell along with the rest of the class, giving me a small wave on her way out. She'd asked me if I wanted to hang out at break, but I told her that I was busy, and she didn't pry. I guessed that I wanted to at least try with Noah, even if he wasn't talking to me at the moment.

Unfortunately, I wasn't the only one who had stayed a little later before leaving Biology.

"Weirdo!" Mackenzie called, just as I'd exited the door. I turned around without even thinking "yes you!"

I couldn't believe that one Mackenzie was talking to me and two that she called me a weirdo to my face. Wait, scrap that, I could believe she said that. I stayed where I was as she crept over to me, her face one of disgust as always. I think I'd only seen her face that way – never happy anyway – I guessed she saved her smiles for her friends, whoever they were now.

"You know you're a loser, right?" I kept very still as she said all of this "Like, I can't think of one person who actually likes you – how do you expect to ever have any friends?" She put it all casually, like it was common knowledge. Obviously not to me over the past month "So I know that you think you and Katie are 'mates' but seriously we all know that she's only hanging out with you because she's mad at me"

She paused slightly, wanting to gauge a response that she wasn't going to get from me.

"Well, here's the thing, you're that much of a psycho bitch that Katie's never going to stay long – I mean who can really stand you? You just don't really have anything that attracts anyone. Like you're ridiculously ugly – just look at your messy hair – you're a bit of a try hard and you can't even hold a conversation. Why would anyone want that?" She gave me faux innocent eyes and I wanted to slap her so hard it was unreal. I couldn't lie – I was intimidated by her. She just seemed so... aggressive and I did feel pretty offended – who wouldn't?

But Elliot's words came back to me – she was working so hard to offend me for what? Just so that she could feel better about herself? This was stupid.

"Right, so you're talking about people being able to stand me? See, I'm not the person to ask for that – you know who is? You're boyfriend!" Her mouth was in a large 'o' shape. "And yes, I can't lie that I'm pretty ugly, but seriously where's that going to get you? You seem to prioritise it over everything else, hence you always looking nice, but does it actually gain you anything? Does it really hide your extreme narcissism? I don't think so."

"What the fuck are you on about – my boyfriend is none of your business?"

"Ahh you see, it is! Do you want to know why? Because we hang out daily, which I'm not going to lie, seems quite a bit more than you!" She didn't reply, just stood there. I was on a roll now and I had a feeling it wasn't going to end any time soon.

"And yes, I'm a bit of a try hard, but who isn't? You seem to be trying very hard right now, trying to rip me to shreds, so who are you to say that I am? Next time you try to attack someone based on superficial things that don't matter, think with your self-absorbed mind before speaking."

I left her there, feeling amazing. I'd actually done that. Like me. I'd actually done it.

...Or not quite. Honestly, I wished that the conversation played out that way – it would have been incredible to finally stand up to Mackenzie. Unfortunately for me, that was something for Via in a parallel universe to say, and not for this one. For me, this conversation ended when Mackenzie called me ugly and she walked away. I tried to tell myself that standing up to her wouldn't have done any good, that if I could miraculously complete the argument as in my head, it would have made everything worse, but there was a piece of me that would have loved to see her face barely able to register what I'd just said even if I would have had to face the consequences later on.

Hi I really hate Mackenzie too much considering that she's merely a figment of my imagination but you know, that's cool. I hope you're enjoying this even with this insanely annoying character :)
