3:42.

That was the current time, and Castiel was sitting in his science class with eight minutes left of this boring video they were watching. Castiel never understood science. He thought it was cool and all, but how could mankind figure all of this out? How could mankind possibly figure out how old a grain of sand is, or how long the sun had been burning bright in the sky. That was a kind of thought that Castiel couldn't fathom.

Another thought that he couldn't fathom was that in less than ten minutes, Castiel would be voluntarily going to a school dance voluntarily. Castiel would be walking into a dance to actually dance. As anyone can tell, Castiel is really, really bad at this. He can't tell if he's excited or anxious, and neither of those feel the slightest bit of good to Castiel. The feeling was indescribable. His heart pounded and he felt a wave of some sort crash over him. It was annoying, to say the least. He was really tired of waiting.

"Alright, guys. Time to pack up," his teacher called, making Cas shove his history notebook in his bag. He had nothing very big, and he was always quite organized, so Cas was done right as the bell rang.

And he took off like a racehorse.

Castiel had actually bothered to get slightly dressed up. He wore a suit, a blue tie, and a pair of black boots. Lucifer had lent him the shoes, and he had to admit, they were quite comfortable. They were soft on the bottom, and provided support for his feet. He almost didn't want to give them back to his brother.

"Castiel!" He heard a familiar voice, and turned around to seeDean standing there. "Let's get to the front of theming so we can get in sooner.

Ehhhh, no.

"Okay," Castiel smiled, looking at Dean happily.

What Castiel failed to notice is that Dean had known what he felt for his friend for about five years, now, and the feeling was so satisfying to him. Dean looked at that messy haired, blue eyed beauty and thought almost the same thing as he did when he looked at that blue Impala. Except he wanted to change that color. He thought about that car. He said, "I'm gonna have that car one day." Well now, he was staring at Cas, thinking, "I'm gonna have that boy one day."

But Cas didn't know that. Cas didn't know a thing about Dean when it came to that. He assumed that Dean was this cute, heterosexual guy who thought of Cas as nothing but his best friend.

You're so wrong, Castiel.

Dean walked in, almost treated like royalty. He held his head high, a smile on his face, and the best part is, his arm was around Cas' shoulders in an attempt to say, This is mine, and only mine. If you try to steal my possession, I will not hesitate to end you.

Castiel was elated, but also afraid.

If Castiel were to list off all of his fears, a school dance would check off every single thing and then some. Cas doesn't think he can dance (yet he's the only guy in dance class because every other guy not in athletics or PE were in ballet folklorico), he doesn't like crowds or loud music, and he hates talking to anyone but Dean and Alfie. But Dean was happy, so he was too.

"Alright, anyone with dates out there, remember the balloon rule." The principal practically yelled into the mic. "Besides that, stay safe and have fun."

The balloon rule was so stupid.

Castiel couldn't imagine a world without the balloon rule, though. It was where, in slow dances, you must pick up a balloon and put it in between you and your partner to ensure a safe distance.

"Cas," Dean cooed. "Come and dance with me."

Castiel hadn't realized he was standing on the sidelines until Dean made that statement. He certainly didn't realize that it had been twenty minutes as well. "Uhm, Dean..."

"Come on, Angel!"

That name had become his kryptonite.

"Ugh." The song that was playing, Castiel didn't know the name to. It was highly annoying and repetitive, but Castiel managed to bounce along with Dean to it. He looked at his friend, who was smiling from ear to ear. Castiel felt nostalgic.

Dean never smiled that much anymore.

Sure, he'd smile when he was told, but ever since the fire, the old spark in Dean's eye was gone, and he never knew why.

The next song was slow.

Oh no.

Dean glanced at Cas, and Castiel stared at him with fear in his eyes. Dean turned to him, bowed, and said, "May I have this dance?"

Castiel slowly took his hand, shaking. This was not happening. Dean could not be doing this. Dean isn't a romantic. He never was. Castiel was always the one that'd bring the flowers or freaking propose a dance like this. Dean was being oddly charming. Castiel couldn't wrap his mind around the fact that Dean is dancing with him. Dean is smiling and dancing with him. "Dean, why did you ask me?"

"Hm?"

"Why did you ask me to this dance, Dean?"

"Well you know that girl, Suzanne?" Dean raised an eyebrow at Castiel, tensing up a bit.

"Yeah." Castiel stared into those green eyes. They showed Cas all he needed to see—nervousness. Dean was nervous to tell him. He liked him.

"She was going to ask you, and I..." Dean shook his head violently. "I needed to ask you first." Dean looked down, the song ending. "I... I really like you, Cas."

Castiel smiled at him, pulling him into a hug. "I do too, Dean." He pulled back, grinning like an idiot. "I'm going to go use the restroom, kay?"

Dean nodded, and Castiel trudged to the restroom, happily. Today was actually the best thing that had happened to the boy for a long time. Castiel was quick, like he always was. It was cold in the bathroom, almost menacing. Still, Castiel was too happy with the current situation. The smile never left his face.

Until Jacob Valdez walked into the bathroom.

And the entire 7th grade Football A team.

"So, Castiel, do you know why we are here?" Jacob asked, giving him a quizzing look.

Castiel backed up, his heart rate increasing to an almost new high. He stared at them with horror. "N... No," he squeaked.

"It's because you," Jacob stepped towards him, a tiny grin on his face. He shoved his arm over Castiel's shoulder, pinning him against the wall. "are distracting our star player." He gripped Castiel's jaw, grinning before forcing it to the right. A crack could be heard, and Castiel made a tiny noise of pain. "That's so you don't scream.

From then on, Castiel was treated like a piñata, being smacked, and punched, and scratched, and whacked. "You know, Castiel. I don't know why Dean likes you so much. You're so fucking ugly."

Ow.

"Overrated."

Ow.

"Stupid."

Ow.

"Useless."

Shut up.

"I may be all of those things, but I'll never be as shallow and idiotic as you are, Jacob," Castiel spat through his immobilized jaw. He brought up his knee and shoved it into his stomach.

"Oh, you'll regret that one."

"Make one more move and I break your arm, Valdez." Dean stood in the doorway, behind the team, a look of anger on his face. He was seething. You could practically see the steam coming out of his ears. "Drop him or I quit the team."

Jacob immediately dropped Cas, who almost crumpled to the floor. Almost. He leaned on the wall, watching each one of the boys flee the bathroom. "Bye, boys." Dean waved as they fled. "Cas," he whispered, his voice softening. Dean stared in the mirror for a moment, mumbling a, "No, shut up," before turning his attention back to the boy. "Cas, holy hell."

"'M good, Dean."

"Don't do that again. Let me help you out." Dean grabbed his friend, wincing at how black his eye was, and the blood dripping from almost every hole on his face.

Castiel felt like 3,000 needles had pierced his skin, and were attempting to shove themselves through his bone. It wasn't a pleasant feeling at all. So, for once, he shut his mouth, and let Dean carry him out of the dance. "I'm... I'm really sorry this happened. It was because of me and it could have been-"

"Please be quiet." Castiel gave Dean a tiny squeeze on the shoulder.

"I'm sorry, Cassie."

"Don't be sorry." Cas was handed an ice pack. "Today was amazing."

"But..." Dean glanced at Castiel, letting a grin climb onto his face. "Yeah. It really was."
