Season 2, episode 8

✦✧✦✧

"So, it was just the two of you in his car? Alone?" Hanna asked from the backseat.

Sophie, Spencer, Aria and Hanna were sitting in Spencer's car outside Emily's house waiting for the tanned girl to join them. As they were waiting, Spencer had told them about her little chat with Garrett and Aria had informed them about how Mike had stolen something that belonged to Jenna. However, he had found in Garrett's apartment.

"I didn't know where else to meet him, it wasn't like I could ask him that stuff down at the precinct" Spencer said.

"How did you get away from him?" Sophie asked.

"When Aria sent me that text, I told him it was from my mother" Spencer told them, "That she wanted me home asap, am I still shaking? I'm still shaking" Spencer said, holding up her hands which were trembling.

"I think we're all shaking" Hanna said, leaning between the space between the two front seats to talk to the girls in the front, "can you put the heater on? You can make a slushy back here"

"Guys, why would Jenna give him that lantern?"

"You don't know she gave it to him?" Hanna asked from besides Aria.

"What do you think, he bought it at the blind artists' craft fair?" Spencer asked the blonde, "Of course she gave it to him, the question is when did they become buddies, and why?"

"They grew up across the street from each other, they obviously know each other" Sophie added.

"Maybe he's just bringing raw meat to Jenna's cat" Hanna suggested.

"Toby lives there too, and they don't have a cat"

"Then maybe he was bringing raw meat over for Jenna"

Spencer and Sophie rolled their eyes at Hanna's comment, "Here comes Em" Sophie said, nodding in the direction in which their friend was walking towards them.

"So, who's living in her house now?" Sophie asked.

"Some losers who can't figure out the alarm system" Hanna scoffed, "they've tripped it like three times, the security company keeps calling her mom in Texas"

"Everything okay?" Spencer asked the tanned girl as she climbed into the back seat of the car.

"Yeah, it's fine" Emily nodded, "it's just so weird to walk in there and see other people's stuff"

"Hey, why don't you tell them to lay off the alarm for a couple days?" Hanna asked.

"I'm guessing they don't feel safe" Emily shrugged.

"Well, they will now" Hanna muttered, "I'm guessing Aria's parents are gonna have Mike on lockdown till he turns eighteen"

"You did not just say that Han" Aria snapped.

"What?" Hanna raised her eyebrows, "I'm not judging, I'm just guessing that your little brother will find another hobby other than breaking and entering"

"You can't say stuff like that Hanna"

"Guys, look I don't know what's going on with my brother" Aria sighed, "If I knew you would know"

"Emily?" Spencer said, eyeing the familiar, dark car that was driving towards them, "isn't that Garret's car?"

"I think it is" Emily nodded, leaning forwards over the driver's seat.

"Where is he going?" Aria asked as they watched him stop the car, turning it off before walking out. The girls ducked down as to not be seen by the man.

"Probably to his parents' house" Emily said.

However, the girls watched Garret stroll right past his parents' house and into Jenna's.

"Oh my God, he's going into Jenna's house" Aria panicked.

"Thank you for that observation" Sophie snapped.

"Is Toby home?" Hanna asked, turning to Spencer.

"No, he went to get his parents from the airport and I thought he said Jenna went with him" Spencer shook her head.

"He just walked in" Emily said as the girls watched Garrett walk into the house.

"Again, thank you for that observation" Sophie grumbled as the five of them climbed out of Spencer's car.

They tried to be as quiet as possible, however the sound of Hanna's shoes clanking against the road made that impossible.

"Could you walk any softer?" Spencer harshly whispered to the blonde behind her.

"Please, Jenna can't hear us she's blind" Hanna dismissed with the wave of her hand.

"You-" Sophie started, raising a quizzical eyebrow at her friend.

"You know what I mean" Hanna rolled her eyes.

The girls moved closer to Jenna's house, walking to the side where they knew the girls bedroom was. They watched through the window as Jenna removed her glasses along with the robe she was wearing, revealing a pair of silk pyjamas.

Sophie gasped as Garrett came into view, wrapping his arms around her waist. Jenna reached out to place her hands around his neck and they watched as the police officer held the girl closely, before gently kissing her.

As soon as Sophie received the message from Spencer telling her that she was on her way to collect the blonde because Emily was in the hospital, she was out of bed in an instant.

Spencer had been a little vague on the details, but from what she could tell, Emily had collapsed at school in serious amounts of pain.

"So, all of those muscle spasms and the pain - that's all coming from your stomach?" Hanna asked as she sat on the edge of Emily's hospital bed.

"Yeah, but ulcers can heal" Spencer said, "It's not forever, Em"

"Yeah, but she's got like a hole..." Hanna started.

"Okay she's got a hole in her stomach, let's move on" Sophie said, trying to change the topic of the conversation for Emily's sake.

"Where'd your dad go?" Spencer asked the tan girl.

"He went to the house to talk to the new tenants" Emily sighed, "Guys, I have to deal with this. I can't keep lying to him"

Sophie reached out her hand and wrapped it around the girls shoulders at her words. She knew where Emily was coming from because the pressure from A was quite literally eating her away.

"I guess not, not if it's eating holes in your stomach" Hanna shrugged earning a sharp elbow into the side from Spencer, "Ow!"

"Moving on!" Spencer exclaimed.

"Hey, I'm sorry I got here as fast as I could" Aria said, entering the room, "I had to escape family court in my living room"

"Mike on trial?" Hanna asked.

"Yeah, but the defendant didn't even show up" Aria rolled her eyes, "I got you your favourite" she said, holding a brown take-out coffee cup towards the girl.

"She can't have coffee right now" Sophie told her.

"Oh"

"Yeah, she's got a hole in her stomach" Hanna whispered to Aria, rather loudly.

"Moving on" Spencer repeated, rolling her eyes at the blonde girl, "Hanna and I can go down to the canteen and get you a herbal tea instead?" she suggested, "unless you want us all here when your dad gets back"

"She's not telling her dad" Hanna insisted, "if he finds out that the letter is fake, he's gonna move her to Texas"

Sophie did slightly agree with her fellow blonde for her own selfish reasons. She had spent a year away from the girls and had already lost one of her best friends, she didn't want to go through any of that again. But the other part of Sophie knew that Emily was better off in Texas – away from A.

"If she doesn't tell him, she's not gonna get any better" Spencer argued.

"But she doesn't have to make up her mind right this second, okay?" Aria butted in.

"She already has" Emily sighed, "I'm telling him the truth"

"Is that Jason again?" Aria asked as Sophie's phone rung for the fifth time that evening. The two girls were still at the hospital and currently in the elevator as Spencer had sent out and S.O.S message.

"Yeah" Sophie sighed, "I can't bring myself to answer him"

"What's going on between you two?" the brunette asked, "I could see the way he was looking at you at my parent's dinner party"

"I don't know" Sophie shrugged, "we slept together that night and I just haven't been able to bring myself to talk to him since"

"You love him, and he loves you so what's the problem?"

"I don't know" Sophie snapped, "can we just drop it?"

"Fine but you have to talk to him, it's not fair" Aria muttered as the elevator doors opened and the two girls stepped out into the dimly lit hallway.

"Psst. In here" they heard Spencer say and before she knew it, Spencer had grabbed Sophie's wrist and had pulled her into a small room with the word 'LAUNDRY' handing above it.

"Kinky" Sophie snorted as she pulled her wrist out of Spencer's grasp.

"Put this on" Spencer said, throwing an article of clothing to each Sophie and Aria. However, Sophie didn't react in time and the fabric smacked her square in the face.

Sophie eyed the fabric as she picked it up, raising her eyebrows as she recognized the red and white striped clothing to be the uniform that volunteers usually wear.

"This is such a bad idea" Sophie muttered as she shimmed off her dress, "what are we even doing?"

"We're going to the morgue" Spencer replied as she changed into her own uniform.

"I hope for all our sake that you're joking" Sophie scoffed.

"Soph's right, we can't just break into the morgue" Aria added, pulling her hair out of the back of the uniform.

"I get you don't believe me, but Jason is still acting really suspicious" Spencer started.

"No, we're not doing this again" Sophie hissed.

"Just shut up and follow me" Spencer dismissed as she opened the door slightly to see if it was clear for them to exit. However it seemed they weren't as she quickly shut the door and signalled for both girls to be quiet.

Sophie felt her phone rapidly buzzing in her bra as she pulled it out, expecting it to be Jason, however she was surprised to see multiple messages from Emily.

"Breaking into the morgue is going to have to wait" Sophie told them as she typed a response back to Emily.

"Why?" Spencer asked, turning to face the blonde, "Sophie what's up?"

"A"

"Your pain cream?" Sophie asked, looking down at the tube of cream that was sitting in the middle of a plate while Aria held the lid with the message from A.

"A is in our medicine cabinets too?" Aria scoffed, "this has to be a new record"

"How long has this been in your system?" Spencer asked.

"Did it damage any organs?" Aria chimed in.

"Forget my organs" Emily cried, "it's on my medical charts, it's ruined my life!"

"Emily medical records are private"

"Not from your parents" Emily exclaimed.

The air in the hospital room had become incredibly tense, and Sophie could see why. Emily was worried about her parents finding out that there were steroids in her system, courtesy of A.

"What are you gonna tell your dad?" Sophie asked carefully.

"I'm gonna tell him to get me out of here" Emily told them, "Take me to Texas, \i'm done. It cant get worse than this"

"Emily, remember A tried to plow Hanna down with a car" Spencer reminded them.

"IS that supposed to make me feel better?" Emily scoffed.

"I'm just saying that A tried to take one of us down and it didn't work" Spencer explained.

"Spencer, A is taking us down!" Emily shook her head, "one at a time, Aria's probably next"

"Can we all go to Texas?" Aria asked.

"No!" Spencer demanded, "Stop it! We're not giving in to this freak. Look, we are this close to finding out what happened to Alison and if A is the one who killed her"

"And Ian" Aria added, nodding her head.

"Yeah, and then A is going to be the one leaving Rosewood. Not us"

Their conversation was interrupted when Emily's hospital door opened and Emily's dad walked in. Sophie scrambled to hide the pain cream from sight whilst Aria did the same with the A message.

"Hi, sorry to interrupt" he said as he walked further into the room, smiling at the girls.

"No worried" Sophie shrugged.

"We actually have to get back to work" Spencer said, hands firmly holding the lid of the food tray down.

"When did you three start volunteering at the hospital?" Mr. Fields asked the girls as they walked towards the door.

"Today's actually our first day" Aria quickly informed him, "We're still on hour one"

"It's freezing in here" Sophie shivered as she rubbed her arms with her hands trying to warm herself up.

The three girls had successfully made their way into the hospital's morgue and Sophie had followed Spencer into the room once the brunette pushed the doors open. However, as soon as Sophie stepped foot into the dimly lit room a rush of freezing cold air nipped her skin as goosebumps rose on her bare arms.

"Yeah, be thankful for that" Spencer dismissed.

Sophie felt a wave of nausea wash over her as she looked around the room. Cream covered sheets covered multiple bodies that were laying on metal tables. "I can't believe I let you talk me into this" she muttered at Spencer.

"Guys...focus" she snapped her fingers at the two girls.

"I can't do this" Aria frantically shook her head.

"No, you're not doing anything okay?" Spencer assured her, "You just need to keep watch, Sophie?"

Sophie whined as Spencer gestured her to come forward and lightly stomped her foot on the ground. Spencer didn't look at all pleased with her tantrum.

"Why do I have to do this?" Sophie muttered, "why can't it be her?"

"Are those cookies?" Aria asked in surprise, ignoring Sophie's childish actions, "How can anybody eat in here? Especially cookies"

"They stay fresh"

"I can't believe you just said that" Sophie groaned.

"Whatever" Spencer waved the comment off, "Okay, there's got to be some kind of system" she said, walking over to one of the filing cabinets on the other side of the room.

"Here it is" Spencer said, opening one of the metal drawers revealing a bunch of folders sitting inside. "They've got autopsies in here dating back to 2007, okay. D...Dehaven ... Delmore ... Dilaurentis, Alison"

Spencer carefully took the file from its place in the drawer, holding it tightly. The two walked over to once of the lamps placed on the desk and Sophie leaned over Spencer's shoulder as she opened the file.

The two shared a look before they began to read over the notes full of medical jargon as Aria came over to join them.

"Do you understand any of this?" Sophie asked Spencer as the blonde stared at the file in confusion.

"What the hell is 'Occipital fontanelle'?" Aria asked, pointing to the word on the piece of paper.

"It's this part of your skull" Spencer answered, not looking up from the file as she patted the back of Sophie's head.

"Look who I'm talking to, where you pre-med in pre-school?" Aria asked, shocked from Spencer's knowledge.

"There's a lot in here that I don't understand" Spencer admitted as she flicked through the pages, "Wait, here is the summary page"

"The impact on the posterior of the victim's cranium..." Aria read.

"The back of her head" Spencer interjected.

"... Indicates that she was facing away from the assailant

"They got her from behind" Spencer gasped, "she was ambushed"

"Or running away" Sophie muttered as she felt her mouth go dry.

"Trying to escape"

The three fell silent for a moment. This type of information hadn't ever been disclosed to them, they had no idea how their friend had actually died.

"The cranium was displaced inward upon impact" Sophie read from the file, "What does that even mean?"

"It means she was hit so hard they dented her skull" Spencer answered, a horrified look on her face as she looked as the x-ray image she picked up from the file. Spencer held the x-ray out as the girls stared at the way the back of the skull was weirdly placed. A large crater sitting on the crown of the head. "And the weapon was most likely a curved, blunt edge-"

"Like a field hockey stick" Aria gasped.

"Yeah, like the one that Ali borrowed from me? The one that Jason most likely buried in my backyard?" Spencer told them and Sophie could practically hear the clogs turning in her head as she connected the dots.

"No" Sophie shook her head, "we're not doing this again"

"Sophie, you need to-"

"Just keep reading" Aria cut Spencer off.

Sophie teared her eyes away from the file as she pulled her lips into a tight line. However, Spencer's gasp brought Sophie's attention right back to the file.

"What is it?" the blonde asked, eyeing her friend.

"There was dirt in her lungs" Spencer read.

"What does that mean?" Aria asked, raising her eyebrows.

"It means that she was breathing in dirt when she was buried. That blow to her head didn't kill her"

"I don't understand" Sophie furrowed her eyebrows quizzically.

"It means Alison was buried alive"
