Exam question on what affects the rate at which micro organisms grow.

Plan an investigation that will allow you to find out about one condition which will affect the growth of micro organisms. To do this you will use resazurin dye to show up how quickly the bacteria is growing. (4 marks).

MODEL ANSWER

I think that if leave milk samples in warm conditions (I.e. room temperature) then micro organisms are more likely to grown quickly. The growth of the micro organisms will eventually turn the milk sour. I think that this will happen because there are small amounts of micro organisms in the milk already. I also known that cooling food down slows down the growth of micro organisms because growth rates are changed by temperature. Warm temperatures increase the growth rate.

Believe it or not this was answer scored full marks. I think that to improve this there should have been mention of the resazurin dye, which was in the question. The good things about this answer were:

1) Provides a strong hypothesis, about what they think will happen
2) The use of scientific knowledge strengthened the answer and took it to new heights.
3) They explained WHY using Connectives, like because.
