"Are you Parker Reyes?" she asks before I can ask what's going on. I nod.

"I have Kenny Payne's mother on the phone. She would like to speak to you."

I feel my heart sink into my stomach. Kenny's mom..? Is asking for me? In the middle of the school day? Consider me absolutely terrified...

It turns out Kenny got into a fight... Kenny's mom was called, but she's in the middle of work, so she was asking if it was at all possible for me to check up on him. I agreed because I wasn't doing anything that hour, and Sam and Miguel both texted me saying they left school early to train with Mr Lawrence anyway. I feel a little left out, but it's whatever, I'll ask one of them later if I really care that much.

I walk briskly into the middle school for the second time in the span of less than a week, finding Kenny in the office sitting next to- por el amor de Dios. It's Anthony. Are you kidding me? After that whole thing I went on? What is it with the LaRusso family and not listening to me?

"Hey, are you okay?" I ask, kneeling to his level when I get closer. Kenny nods.

"Did they tell you what happened?" he asks.

"I got the basic rundown. Are you sure you're okay? You're not hurt? No twisted ankles, bruises, burns, scrapes?" I ask. When I heard he got into a fight, I got here as fast as I could. When I got into a fight at school...

"No, none of that, I'm okay, I swear," he says. I nod, a hand finding its way to my side where the slash marks are. I just had to be sure... he seems to pick up on the action.

"It wasn't as bad as your fight. They're not as good as the people you were fighting."

He's not wrong. Anthony scoffs a little. If Kenny didn't beat him up enough, I'd finish the job if I wasn't the way I am. All I do is glare at him. I told him to stop and now look where we are.

"I'm glad you're not hurt, but ay, Pollito, don't scare me like that ever again, okay?" I say, choosing to just ignore Anthony, "and your mom is worried too. Don't think she won't be on your back about it when she gets home tonight."

"I'm sorry... they wouldn't leave me alone..." Kenny says. I get it... I kicked Kyler in the face when he wouldn't leave me and Eli alone, so I can't really preach about not resorting to violence.

"Trust me, if anyone understands, it's me. If Anthony had been my bully, he would have a broken nose right now," I say. He smiles. Bueno, that was the goal. Before either of us can say another word, a set of loud, familiar footsteps, fill my ears. Mr LaRusso... I get to my feet quickly, putting a hand on Kenny's shoulder as I face the door. I was right. And Mrs LaRusso too. Joy.

"Parker? What are you doing here?" Mr LaRusso asks. I hate how he talks to me like nothing is wrong. Did he miss the part where his grand plan is to use me to win the All Valley then..? Then what? What if I fail..? Then the safety of my friends and the overall approval of my mentor goes completely out the window... and if I succeed... then I suppose he just pretends like nothing is wrong. It really is a lose-lose situation for me. Mr LaRusso really is trying to put me in checkmate... and I think he's already got me in check.
