Underneath The Wrapping

It's Christmas morning.

Snow is falling from the sky like leaves fall from the trees every autumn.

Your mother is in the kitchen making everyone hot chocolate.

You're sitting on the floor with your blanket, patiently impatient.

There's one more present left.

You have the urge to just grab the gift from underneath the tree and tear open the wrapping.

You wait patiently.

Finally your mother returns with the hot chocolate.

You take a quick sip.

The warmth of the hot chocolate monster flows down your esophagus, burning everything in it's path.

You shiver, even though it burned.

You sister pulls a gift out from underneath the tree.

It has your name on it.

She hands it to you.

You hold it in your lap determined to rip it open, but you don't.

“Open it!” your sisters yells to you.

Your mother is waiting patiently.

“This is the moment” you think to yourself

“This is the best present out of all the presents”.

The gift is wrapped perfectly.

You slide your fingers over the tape.

You begin to wonder whats underneath the wrapping.

Maybe its the cell phone you been begging for all year.

Your heart begins to race.

Perhaps it's the new iPod that you want ever so badly.

You grip the edge of the wrapping paper.

You squeeze your eyes shut and rip the paper off.

Your heart is racing faster then ever.

You feel the imaginary sweat drip down from your face.

Your stomach begins to swirl in a knot.

You quickly open your eyes.

You gasp.

You can't believe it.

Unsure what to say you smile.

“Well” you say to yourself

“I did need a new pair of socks”.
