The rest of the day passed and Gandalf had not returned. Thorin and I didn't speak to one another for the remainder of the day, but would occasionally catch ourselves looking at each other. I did not regret what I had said and done earlier on. Not one bit.

"He's been a long time," Bilbo said to me.

I nodded. "He sure has."

"Who?" Bofur asked.

"Gandalf," Bilbo and I replied in unison.

"He's a wizard!" Bofur defended. "He'll do as he pleases. Here, do us a favor, take this to the lads." He handed each of us a bowl of stew to take to Fili and Kili. Bilbo and I nodded as we started making our way over to them.

Thorin grabbed my arm.

"Don't tell anyone of what happened this afternoon," he commanded. "It is shameful."

I raised an eyebrow at him. "Whatever you say." I sarcastically bowed to him. "My King."

I walked off, leaving him fuming. I was not a very good servant. No, not servant, assistant. Thorin Oakenshield was not going to tell me what to do. Or anyone else for that matter. Except Gandalf. The man knew what he was doing. He always did.

We approached the brothers.

"Kili!" I whispered for no apparent reason. "Fili!"

They were staring off into the dark. They didn't even look down when Bilbo and I offered them the soup.

"What's the matter?" Bilbo asked.

"We're supposed to be looking out for the ponies," Kili said.

"Only, we've encountered a...slight problem," Fili continued.

"We had 16," Kili stated.

"Now...there's 14," Fili finished.

Bilbo and I looked closer into the group of ponies all huddled together. The group did look somewhat smaller than it did before.

"Daisy and Bungo are missing," Kili further informed.

"Well that's not good," I whispered.

"That's not good at all," Bilbo agreed. "Shouldn't we tell Thorin?"

"Uhh, no," Fili argued. "Let's not worry about him. As our official burglar, we thought that...you might like to look into it."

Bilbo looked at them, unbelieving that they actually wanted him to do something. He looked around and we both noticed that some of the trees had been uprooted and laying on the ground.

"Well, uh...look, some-something big uprooted these trees," he hypothesized.

"That was our thinking," Kili agreed.

"Possibly quite dangerous," I observed.

"Hey!" Fili suddenly jumped up. "There's a light. Over here! Stay down."

Crouching down, the four of us scurried through the forest, heading towards the light. When we got close enough to it, we all huddled close together.

"It's a fire," I breathed. "A big one."

Harsh laughter sounded near the fire. Don't tell me that's what I think it is... I thought.

"What is it?" Bilbo asked.

"Trolls," Kili replied in disgust.

Kili and Fili started to run towards the fire, so Bilbo and I followed. We all hid behind a tree and saw a massive mountain troll walking toward the fire, carrying a pony under each arm.
