GONE. JUST GONE.
Jason couldn’t believe it. It seemed so impossible to him that, after saving Rome, something like this would happen. He almost wanted to glare at the sky and yell, you did nothing this whole quest, and you let this happen? What is wrong with you?
He knew that wouldn’t help, but he was still angry at Jupiter. Jason could almost imagine him, sitting on his throne, ignoring the raging battles and the struggles of the demigods who had to save his sorry rump, like a coward.
Secretly, part of his rage was only to mask his guilt. If only he’d turned around, or heard Hazel’s shout, or something. He knew how important the statue was to Athena and to their quest, but it wasn’t important enough to loose Percy and Annabeth for it.
Jason couldn’t help but remember the battle with the twin giants. He’d fought alongside Percy, as a team. They’d destroyed one giant, and almost another, together. Part of Jason couldn’t help but remember the battle as a memory. He felt ashamed that he already remembered the couple as distant friends, as long gone. He shook himself out of it.
Jason sensed someone approaching him. Piper joined him at the top of the hull, staring into the horizon.
“I know you still think it’s your fault, Jason”
Jason almost smiled. Piper always knew what he was thinking, as if she was part of him. But sadly, she was right. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he could’ve saved Percy and Annabeth, instead of fussing over some statue.
He looked up, but there was no thunder.
“You can’t think like that though. There wasn’t anything you could’ve done. You didn’t see them, and it wasn’t your fault.”
Jason’s heart still felt like a ten pound weight, though.
“But, if I’d just looked-”
“Jason, no buts, or I will shoot you with Brussels sprouts.” She threatened.
Jason laughed and hugged her. “I’m glad you’re still here Pipes, Even if you did just threaten to shoot me with Brussels sprouts.”
Piper pulled back and held the cornucopia horn like a gun. “I won’t hesitate to, either.” She smiled.
