Matthias's POV
We finally reach the end of the tire tracks and find ourselves at a fence a little taller than me. We both start climbing at the same time and start to check the place out.
This area is a small, sketchy town and I can see a larger city further out.
"Let's find a place to crash here then we'll keep looking for Audrey in the morning. We need our strength." Finn yawned. Reluctantly, I nod in agreement and start to look around.
I pop the collar on my shirt to cover my gills and approach a boy about our age leaning on a wall.
"Hey, we're just visiting from another town... You know of any places my friend and I could stay?" I ask. The boy smirks and moves my shirt collar back to it's original position, exposing my gills. "Come on in," he says, leading us behind the building.
There's an entrance covered by an old wooden door. He knocks twice and waits. Someone peers through a small hole and opens the door. "Welcome home." The boy says, showing the place off. It's an abandoned cafe. All the tables are pushed off to the side and old mattresses cover the floor. There's two girls who appear to be twins sitting on the mattresses sharing a bottle of whiskey. There's another boy with small horns standing behind a counter, eating soup out of a can.
They all stare at Finn and I like we're going to hurt them. The girls stand up and back away. I make eye contact with them and show them my gills. One of them nods. "And him?" The other asks, looking st Finn. He sighs and draws his claws out. They go just over his fingernails and are about an inch long each.
They sigh with relief. "Close the door, Desmond, your gonna get us killed," the boy with the horns says. The boy that led us here slams the door shut and takes a seat on one of the tables.
"Alright, so as you can tell, we have two new guys. How about we all introduce ourselves?" Desmond announces. "Let's start with you two," he says, looking at Finn and me. "Um, I'm Finn, this is Matthias," Finn says, his voice cracking. One of the twins giggles and he goes red in the face.
After a while, evetyone is introduced to each other. The twins are named Ellie and Gail. They can both climb up walls using their bare hands. The boy eith the horns is Tony. He doesn't talk much. Then there's Desmond, the boy who can see in the dark.
For once, I don't feel so alone anymore.
The six of us spend the night drinking and telling our stories of close calls with the hunters. Then it hits me.
Audrey.
"Hey, Matt, you doing okay?" Finn asks, slurring his words. I shake my head.
Oh, god, how could I be here while she's there? This isnt okay.
I begin to feel anxious. Things get blurry. "Matt? Matt?" Finn's voice is raising. Then everything goes black.
