The Lawnmower Man

I first saw this one as a kid

I first saw this one as a kid. My dad was a huge fan of it—partly, I suspect, because it dealt with computers (he was super-into computers, especially at the time), and partly because it was a weird movie. I remember it being fairly bizarre, and it gained a sort of totemic status in my mind.

What's the premise? A gardener with some intellectual impairments is given psychoactive drugs and put on an experimental VR regimen to improve his cognitive ability. Needless to say, shit goes cray-cray.

More recently I rewatched the movie and, though the effects are dated now, it still delivers. This movie came at a time when people said VR was right around the corner. It wasn't, but it didn't stop people from dreaming.

The poster says "Stephen King's The Lawnmower Man," though anyone who's read the short story knows the movie deviated heavily from the source material. King's version isn't sci-fi at all, just a horror story about a gardener who eats grass. Still, the movie is a bit spooky, and you won't find anything else quite like it.
