Looking from afar I can see Rebecca just waking up, her frosted covered windows and the snow covering the ground outside like a blanket. Rebecca opening her eyes and looking out the window  is surprised to see an unfamiliar vehicle in the driveway …“DADDY!!!” Rebecca screams  down the stairs in her nightgown as she runs barefoot into the frosty weather only to find that her daddy is nowhere to be found. A tall slender man in military attire approaches the girl. I creep in a little closer to the girl now.  The man takes off his hat and bows his head.“I’m so sorry.” He says handing her a letter. I kiss the girl with my lips pursed against her lips, turning her heart cold and miserable. “Your father gave me this to give to you.” The soldier places a small kitten into the girls’ hands and then heads back to his vehicle and leaves. The girl couldn’t help but look into the kittens vivid green eyes. Her mother heartbroken and in tears of what she just witnessed from afar walks over to the girl and stares into the kittens eyes.

“What should we name him?” Her mama asks her.

                  “Mittens,” the girl smiles.
