Footprints in the Snow (11)
I awoke
or at least I came
from the darkness
I had fallen into
I felt cold
against my cheek
I realized
I was laying
on the snow
on the road
near the field
‘Donna’
I thought
as I quickly got to my feet
I looked around
I was on the road
near the field
where I had first seen
Footprints in the snow
“Donna”
I said aloud
There were no
Footprints in the snow
The field
stretched out before me
undisturbed
to the trees
and
beyond
I felt myself shaking
I took a package
of cigarettes
from my pocket
and lit one
immediately
blowing smoke rings into the still air
“Donna”
I said aloud again
I was still shaking
Had it all been a dream?
Had there even been
Footprints in the snow?
Had they led across the field
to the tree line
where I had found
Donna?
I drew heavily on my cigarette
blowing smoke rings into the still air
There were no
Footprints in the snow
It had been a dream
I tossed the cigarette
into the snow
watched as it disappeared
along with
my dreams
“Donna”
I whispered
Tears filled my eyes
I had not cried
since that day
Since that day
that I said good bye to
Donna
That day that
I promised
I would be back
That day that
i lied
I looked across the field
There was no
Donna
It had all been a
dream
It started to snow
I lit another cigarette
drawing heavily
blowing smoke rings into the now snowy air
Slowly i walked away from the field
from my dream
from Donna
back to reality
