Footprints in the Snow   (1)

Footprints in the Snow

A single set

A straight line

Across an open field

Disappearing into the forest beyond

I lit a cigarette

As far as the eye could see

the Snow was undisturbed

except for that single set of

Footprints

I began to wonder

Why would anyone walk across this open field?

Where was he or she going?

What would possess them to do this?

I drew heavily on my cigarette

blowing smoke rings into the still air

It hadn’t Snowed for days

No telling how long the

Footprints

had been there

Where did they end?

What was beyond the tree line?

Was it some

magical rendezvous place

or

a lonely, empty space?

Finality?

Perhaps

I drew heavily on my cigarette

blowing smoke rings into the still air

Was he or she still out there?

Alone

Lost

Afraid

or

was there another way out?

As far as My eyes could see

the Snow was undisturbed

except for that single set of

Footprints

I drew heavily on my cigarette

I tossed the butt aside

It melted into the Snow and

disappeared

It started to Snow

It Snowed the rest of the day and into the night

The next morning

I walked back to that spot

where I had seen the

Footprints

I lit a cigarette

Footprints in the Snow

A single set

A straight line

Across an open field

Disappearing into the forest beyond

I drew heavily on my cigarette

blowing smoke rings into the air
