i eat breakfast peacefully with my parents,
and there are three disorganized knocks on my door
i open it and west stands there, leaning on the door frame
"c'mon, lotus," he says, "i'm taking you to school."

when i gasp, it isn't because there's a boy taking the chance
of indirectly telling my parents i speak to bad boys like him.
i am scared because he rides a motorcycle.

and because he says my name in a way
that makes my heart hot like my computer
when it's been on for too long.

lotus looks like a mess in the morning,
but it's o-kay, she rocks the outfit.

"well? you coming or not?"
her dad stands up and glares at me,
last time we spoke was when i hit his car
with my bike

"i don't want you going with him," he tells lotus
"but, dad—" she protests.
"him is right here, sir. let's go lotus."
i take her hand and guide her to my bike,
ignoring her whimpers and grimaces as her dad shouts
"you asshole, bring her back! lottie, come back!"

i sit and give lotus my second helmet.
she sits down behind me and stays there.
"put your arms around me," i say.
"i don't wanna."
"do you want to die?"
she wraps her small arms around my waist,
putting her head on my shoulder.

i drive off, wondering
 how warm a person could be.
