What had he done in accepting this, to sacrifice his life to such an undertaking? He would never have the satisfactions of a husband with a bonny wife to sooth the worries of leadership, nor father a brood of fine children to follow him. Who could prize the return of the realm above the price of its restoration? Should he not have valued song, cheer, good friends and a merrier world above lands and hoarded gold?

 A fool he was, this was no choice, he had accepted nothing. It was his path and without the possibility of an altered course.
