﴿و ما كان لمؤمن و لا مؤمنة إذا قضى الله و رسوله أمرا أن يكون لهم الخيرة من أمرهم و من يعصي الله و رسوله فقد ضلّ ضلالا بعيدا﴾ – ألأحزاب: 36.
“No believing man nor any believing woman should exercise any choice in their affair once Allah and His messenger have decided upon some matter. Anyone who disobeys Allah and His messenger has wandered off into manifest error” – (33:36).
To totally submit to the Will of Allah is to succumb to that superior status of Allah’s Lordship and to obey as would an obedient slave his wise master. This obedience, at its highest level, would mean that the obedient obeys in such a way that (s)he does not think about a matter or perform an act but to think of Allah before, during and after the execution of that act, something that necessitates total remembrance of Allah and His commands and the subsequent absence of room for disobedience be it the misuse or abuse of His gifts to humans.
Those who believe in Allah know very well that there are certain things that please Him and there are other things that do not. They know that Allah has ordered humans to practice certain acts and to avoid others. They understand that there are things that are considered lawful whilst others unlawful. But what makes the importance of knowing what pleases Allah and what doesn’t is the fact that what Allah has made obligatory on them is for their benefit and what He forbids them doing is again for their benefit. This latter certainty, the principle of divine wisdom behind reasons for legislations forms the basis of their belief in His Wisdom and provides a driving force for strictly adhering to Allah’s laws.
In the era of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and the covenant of the followers, when a verse forbade the eating of pork, the Sahaabah abstained from it, and they did not discuss the matter. Although in their time there were no sophisticated scientific tools to make them know that pork is harmful to the human body once eaten, as we know today. But with no knowledge of the wisdom behind the prohibition of pork, they refrained from eating it, and they were also able to ask the question as we ask today but instead they chose to submit without questioning subhan Allah !!
And today, Allah's wisdom behind the prohibition of pork was revealed .This is the case for music and others. To know the wisdom behind the prohibition of things is never a reason to leave the order and refrain from applying it. Perhaps tomorrow they will discover a new scientific thing, and they know the wisdom of the prohibition of music, and we are dead and the time has come to apply the judgment.
Scholars stated that the words lahw-al hadeeth in the sixth verse of Surat Luqman referred to music and musical instruments. Hadrat Ibn Mas’ud swore that what was meant by lahw-al hadeeth was musical instruments and music. (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Tafsir-ul-Madarik)
(Now, are you amazed at this statement [the Qur’an]? You are laughing instead of crying, and you negligently occupy yourselves in games and amusements.) [An-Najm 59-61
And now let's look to those ahadeth of our prophet Muhammad peace be upon him
(It is haram to listen to a songstress or to look at her face. Her money is haram, too. The flesh that is nourished on haram sources is deserving of Hellfire.) [Tabarani]
(A time will come when some people of my Ummah will consider committing fornication, wearing silken garments, consuming alcohol, and mizmaar [musical instruments] to be lawful [halal].) [Bukhari]
(Music leads to fornication.) [Maktubat-i Rabbani, Vol. 3, Letter 41]
(Music causes discord in the heart.) [Bayhaqi]
(Just as water makes herbage grow, so songs, games, and amusements make discord in one’s heart grow. By Allah, just as water makes herbage grow, so the Qur’an and remembrance [dhikr]makes the faith in one’s heart grow.) [Daylami]
(My Rabb has made haram for me alcohol, gambling, the goblet drum, and songstresses.) [Imam-i Ahmad]
The Messenger of Allah forbade people from earning money through musical instruments. [Baghawi]
(There will be some people from my Ummah who will drink alcohol, calling it by other than its real name. They will enjoy themselves with songstresses and musical instruments. Allahu ta’ala will make them sink into the earth and will disfigure them into pigs and monkeys.) [Ibn Majah]
(If the following five things appear, my Ummah will be deserving of annihilation: cursing [la’nah] each other, drinking alcohol, wearing silken garments, musical instruments, homosexuality and lesbianism.) [Daylami, Hakim]
(I have been sent to also do away with musical instruments [mizmaar] and idols.) [Imam-i Ahmad, Abu Nu’aym, Ibn Najjar]
(After Iblis descended to Earth, he said, “O my Rabb, give me a home.” It was said to him, “Public baths are your homes.” He wanted food. It was said to him, “The foods eaten without uttering Basmalaare yours.” He wanted a muazzin. It was to him, “Musical instruments are your muazzin.” He was told, “Tattoos are your writing. Lies are your words. Soothsayers and fortune-tellers are your messengers. Women are your traps.”) [Ibn Abi Ad-Dunya, Ibn Jarir]
(Iblis asked, “What is my book?” It was said to him, “Your book is a tattoo. Your drink is every intoxicant. Your loyalty is lies. Your muazzin is musical instruments. Your mosque is marketplace.”) [Tabarani]I
The sincere Muslim who is following the Quran and sunnah will submit to the will of his creator and never listen to music or play musical instruments without questioning just like the sahabah did before.
