*Dedicated to my best friend who is determined to join the Army in a few years.*
"I need to tell you something.
I need to tell you today
I am going to join the Army.
It doesn't matter what you say."
***
I don't try to discourage,
I just tell you it's okay.
I know you'll stick with it,
You'll join the Army one day.
***
It's been many years
Since you told me your choice.
I miss you at home.
I miss hearing your voice.
***
You've been away,
For months at a time.
To see you, I'd do anything.
Many mountains, I'd climb.
***
One night I awake
To a knock on the door
I open it to find a soldier,
"What are you here for?"
***
"I am here to deliver
Some devastating news.
You're boyfriend has gone
Into an eternal snooze."
***
I fall to the ground.
Everything goes black.
All I can think of is you
With a large pack on your back.
***
The next thing I see
Is you in my bed
I hold you close to my body
As relief fills my head.
***
You wake up too,
And hug me very close.
You know I always have that dream.
It haunts me like a ghost.
***
In days you'll be deployed.
You'll leave me for a year.
The last thing you'll say is
"I love you very much, my dear."
***
You'll kiss my head
As you catch your flight at noon.
A tear drips down my cheek,
But I know you'll be back soon.
***
The year goes by slowly,
Quietly killing me inside.
But I know you're fighting strongly,
With good friends by your side.
***
I'm counting down the days.
20... 10... 3, 2, 1!
As we hug for the first time,
I whisper "You're finally done."
***
I never let you go.
You don't have to leave me again.
You will stay with me forever.
Until we are a hundred and ten.
***
Well, you joined the Army.
You did what you wanted to do.
You fought hard for your country.
The whole entire time, I loved you.
