Alyssa and Wendy quickly scuttled back to her mom and I sat back down and put my head on the table.

“Wh-what was that?”

“I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to get so worked up.  She just hit a nerve.” I growled.  How dare they talk about something like they know what happened!  Cade may have left me, but he’s back now and promised me an explanation!  He still must care about me even just a little since he said how he knew I deserved to know the truth.  What she said was uncalled for!

“So this older guy?”

“He…he just was an old friend from when I was little.” I sighed, “I began to like him and he suddenly disappeared.  That’s it.” I said looked away from his stare.  I decided to not disclose the part about the guy being his cousin and the fact that I’m still in love with him.

“Okay, so you were really close to him?”

“Yeah, I was.”

“Do you have a hard time forgetting him?”

I looked up at Braxton with the answer obviously plastered across my face. “Yes.”

He thought for a second before speaking up again, “Can I have your permission to try and make you forget him?” He asked.

My heart suddenly split.  As much as he tried, until Cade would just plainly say, ‘I don’t like you, please stop bothering me.’ I was stuck in his grasp.

I thought about it though and maybe after tonight I would know for sure.  Then something else occurred to me, why was Braxton putting in this much effort?

I decided to ask, “Why? Why do you want to go to all that trouble with dealing with my mess?”

He smiled kindly, “Because I can tell you’re a girl that’s worth it.  You are strong and smart and beautiful.  You have an incredible sense of humor, and there’s this quality about you that’s almost indescribable, making you all the more alluring.  The moment I met you and you said the thing about bananas I knew I needed to know you more.  Not wanted, but needed.”

My chest actually physically hurt from his words.  “Okay.” I replied quietly.

“Okay what?”

“You can try.” I gave in.  “I can’t guarantee anything though.”

“Alright, just tell me one thing.”

“Yes?”

“Do you like me?”

“I do.” I answered honestly.  I had so much fun spending time with him, he was unlike any guy I’d met, but the problem was that Cade was unlike any guy either.  They both were different in very significant ways.  I had a stronger connection with Cade due to our past, but maybe that was just it, the past.  I decided to give Braxton a way out though, “If I am just too much and you can’t deal with my problems anymore you don’t have to stick around.  If another girl comes your way, please don’t beat around the bush.  I don’t want to be the reason for your problems too.”
