"What is this?" My mother said,

Puzzled by the look of dread

She got, patting Puss's head.

"I don't know," said I, all red.

Beneath the bed the cat did go,

Hissing at my dear, old Mo'--

Why Puss does this, who can know?

Sour Puss is consistent, though.

When brother visits, and sissy, too--

Puss hisses & runs. Oh, what to do?

They bring her treats, a toy or two,

She still hisses. It makes me blue.

When Puss lounges in the sun,

If neighbors pass, in jog or run--

Why, Puss will hiss, and come undone!

Perhaps hissing is her idea of fun?

"What is this!" My mother said.

Rebuked by Puss, she shook her head,

"Could be something she was fed!"

And sighed, and then she went to bed.
