The Wait

I am pacing back and forth.

The doors slide open as I approach

And shut as I leave.

Open, close.

Open, close.

Back and forth.

Open, close.

The doors are holding their breath.

They are hoping that

This time

I will walk through them

And keep going

And never return.

I turn around.

The doors close.

Back and forth,

Open, close.

I pace to feel

Like I am going somewhere

Like I have a purpose–

But the endpoint shifts from wall to wall.

It is not working.

The sign on the doors says

Caution.

Automatic doors.

Caution! Caution!

Back and forth.
