Chapter Twelve

~~
“In that case you wouldn’t mind dancing with me?” Emma said with a sweet smile “The music is lovely and I do love to dance…”

Rose’s eyes narrowed as her old “Friend” from school asked Isaac to dance with her. Isaac was not Emma’s husband Isaac was her husband; Emma should be dancing with her own husband not someone else’s, that wasn’t proper.

“Actually Emma,” Rose spoke up for perhaps the first time in her life “My dear husband always dances the first dance with me.” She emphasized the word “husband” not so subtly but she didn’t care, Emma needed to know Isaac was not someone for her to flirt with.

“Rosie is incorrect,” Isaac said causing Rose’s heart to sink “You see I dance all the dances with my dear wife- not just the first.” He finished with a wide smile; Rose smiled too and accepted his hand. She couldn’t believe that he had picked her over Emma. Her whole life she had felt overlooked, but now she felt as though she was the only girl in the room.

“Thank you” Rose said once they were out of ear shot from Emma.

Isaac smiled “For what?”

“Rejecting Emma’s offer.” Rose said honestly.

“She’s a shrill woman” Isaac shook his head as he started to dance with her “She’s watching us… do you wish to make her even more angry?”

“And just how would we do that?” Rose questioned smiling at the mischievous smirk Isaac now wore on his face.

“Like this” Isaac said in a low whisper as he leaned in and claimed her lips as his own. Rose felt suddenly as if time itself had stopped as they kissed one another, it was highly improper to kiss ones husband in front of everyone but she didn’t care. She wished to remain in his arms as long as possible.

Once he pulled away she barely could breath, he rested his forehead on hers and smiled. Her heart fluttered as she knew that his smile was meant only for her. Could this be what love felt like?

The next three months flew by quickly; Rose and Isaac got to know one another a lot better and even became friends. Isaac looked forward to spending time with Rose each day, and thankfully he hadn’t had to deal with Emma or Howard since their first night on the aboard the ship, they had docked a week ago and now travelled by carriage to her grandparent’s house.

“We’ll be there soon!” Rose said excitedly before she pulled out her small handkerchief and coughed into it. Isaac was growing worried about her as she had become more pale lately and she had been coughing a lot, growing up with a father who was a doctor made him worry all the more and he decided to have her see a doctor, he knew she wasn’t pregnant as they had yet to lay as man and wife.

Rose’s illness didn’t seem to dampen her mood at all though; she smiled brightly as she looked from the window “Isaac,” she said happily “look there, that’s my home.”

Isaac looked out the window where Rose pointed and his jaw dropped, he had been expecting a small cottage of some sort not a grand mansion. The stone building looked like a castle, something you’d expect royalty to live in. A river ran by it while the rolling green hills surrounded it. Isaac had to admit England was far more beautiful than he could have imagined. The scenery made one think they were seeing a piece of haven, he had no idea why Rose had left such a beautiful country.
