Chapter Six

~

There was a slight pounding in the back of my head. I opened my eyes slowly, I didn't know where I was. The walls, they were pillow like, the floor was soft, I felt like I could sleep on it for days. Slowly, I sat up and looked around. Everything was white and soft. I got to my feet and saw a two--way window. 'I am in an insane asylum,' I thought bitterly. 'It had to be Shane... No it couldn't be... Maybe my father? No he's not my father,' I forced myself to remember.

My thoughts were hazy, who had grabbed me? Who had drugged me? I tried to figure it out, though it just made my head hurt worse.

I started to pace, telling myself that Shane couldn't have taken me here.

When my initial panic ended, I curled up in a ball furthest from the door. I sat in the corner, waiting silently. I knew that someone had to come sooner or later.

After a while--I didn't know how long it was--the door opened and someone walked towards me.

"Shawnee," Neil Heigle said, kneeling beside me. "How are you?"

'Well my throat hurts, so does my head. I'm in an insane asylum, and I just figured out that my father killed my mother, how do you think I am?' I thought sarcastically. "Water, please," I whispered, looking up to see that he already had a glass cup full of water in his hand. He handed it to me and let me drink.

"Better?" he asked, watching me as he took the glass from me.

I nodded. "I want to see Shane," I pleaded in a whisper.

"Not until we figure out if you're stable enough," he said. "For now, he'll see you through that room," he said, gesturing to the two--way glass. "He can talk to you through the intercom.

The hot prick of tears caused me to bury my head in my knees. "I want to see him, to touch him. To make sure he's real," I said brokenly. "I want to hold him."

"I know you do, and I want you to be able to, but it simply can't happen right now," he said softly. I felt his hand touch my shoulder.

I immediately recoiled away from him, not wanting him to touch me.

"Don't feel bad Neil, she did it to me too," Shane said. I looked around, then I saw him, at the doorway. "Come on Shawnee, I'm going to take you home," he said, opening his arms for me. I got up and sprinted over to him, and wrapped my arms around his neck.

He wrapped his arms around me and placed his cheek on my head.

"Shane," I sighed, breathing in his familiar scent. He smelled of the outdoors, the place I loved to go when I was younger.

"Shawnee," he replied. "Your cloths are in the bathroom across the hall, go get changed so we can get the hell out of here, I don't like this place."

He nudged me towards the bathroom. "Okay, where will you be?" I asked, looking up and into his calm eyes.

"I'll be right outside the door, waiting for you. Now go," he said, giving me another nudge into the hall. I looked at him as I walked to the bathroom then paused at the door, looking at him and biting my lip, not wanting him out of my sight, even to change. "Go on, I'll be right here, I promise. I'm not going anywhere without you."

"Okay, I'll just be a minute," I said, quickly ducking into the room. The soft cotton shirt fit snugly around me and the shorts were fairly comfortable. I put on the black flats and walked out of the bathroom and straight over to Shane. He wrapped an arm around my waist and we left the mental hospital. We went to his pickup truck and got in quickly.
