Okay I tried my hardest to get through the first Infernal Devices book, but after 250 pages the torture is just too much. This book was awful. Tasteless description, just a mindnumbingly overabundance of infodumping exposition dialogue and meaningless banter.

The MC tessa is in of the biggest brats I've ever had the displeasure to read about. She's vain and superficial, arrogant, mysogonistic, a moron, a burden to everyone, irrational and melodramatic, mean and rude. Will and Jem were the only okay characters. But tessa was just infuriating.

(EDIT: When that one Brother Enoch guy showed up, I think I remember her saying something like: if someone was that ugly, why would they want to live that long?

Whenever Tessa meets someone, the first thing she notices is their appearance in regards to how good-looking they are. The first thing we get when Will bursts into the room is that he's GORGEOUS *eyeroll*. Not anything relevant to his personality, but how bangable he is.

SO many more examples of this. I wish I could go line-by-line in the book and show you.

Mean/rudeness: whenever Will says something, she has to be all b*tchy and snarky toward what he says. The snark and sarcasm are literally 90% of her personality. There's no other substance there. Whenever someone's talking, she has to butt in, be all HEY LOOK AT ME I'M IMPORTANT AND PRETTY AND SMART AND SNARKY. I wanted to punch her in the face. She is NOT important and she adds nothing to the plot whatsoever.

And this just scrapes the surface of my criticism on Tessa. She has such a godawful and offensive personality. I could write pages of rants on Will and Jessamine, too.)

The plot was just so slow and boring. I skimmed over 100 pages because 90% of the words were irrelevant filler.

This book was just terrible... It makes me weep to know it's so popular for some reason because it has no redeeming features other than two characters and the plot twist about 30 pages in with the dark sisters but after that it went downhill fast and is now at the bottom of Lake Drivvel.

1/5 stars.
