Chapter Five

Mistakes Made in Love and Laughter

The months had dragged by, and Adalyn had spent them sleeping, reading, or following Harry. She was rather tired of it watching him go to lessons and talk with friends and go to DA meetings…but at the same time, it was the most exciting thing she’d ever done. Having not gone to Hogwarts herself, Adalyn found the daily life quiet interesting; every now and then she would listen to other peoples conversations, or spend lessons writing letters to Harry, who she’d had almost constant contact with since their night on the roof-she found it especially hilarious when she told him tidbits of information, and he would get very confused about how she knew it.

Dumbledore had taught her a spell years ago that would allow her to go out and about, wander freely, and people would just forget they’d seen her the moment they did, and no one could hear her either. Really, it was like a sound proof invisibility cloak. This made it much easier to shadow Harry and patrol the halls at night than it should have been, and made it easier for Adalyn to listen in on conversations…just in case.

It was lunch hour, and Adalyn was leaning against a wall, listening to Harry talk to Zacharias Smith; he was probably the fifteenth person to ask Harry when the next DA meeting would be, and even Harry (whose patience was rather good) was getting annoyed.

“I'll let you know in the usual way when the next one is,” Harry said over and over again, “but I can't do it tonight, I've got to go to - er - remedial Potions.”

“You take remedial Potions?” asked Zacharias Smith superciliously, having cornered Harry in the Entrance Hall after lunch. 'Good Lord, you must be terrible. Snape doesn't usually give extra lessons, does he?'

Adalyn rolled her eyes; she’d spoken to Snape-he was a git, and he knew it. Plus, he seemed to hate Harry with passion. The occlumency lessons were going to be hell for Harry-and Adalyn, too, since she had to watch.

As Smith strode away in an annoyingly buoyant fashion, Ron glared after him. 'Shall I jinx him? I can still get him from here,' he said, raising his wand and taking aim between Smith's shoulder blades. Adalyn secretly wished Ron would jinx him, so she wouldn’t have to.

'Forget it,' said Harry dismally. 'It's what everyone's going to think, isn't it? That I'm really stup -'

'Hi, Harry,' said a voice behind him. He turned round and found Cho standing there.

At the sight of the pretty girl, Harry seemed to get extremely uncomfortable, which made Adalyn weirdly happy, but the scene of Cho Chang made Adalyn’s blood boil. There was no real reason she shouldn’t like Chang, but for some reason she just didn’t like her.

'Oh,' said Harry, looking rather uncomfortable 'Hi.'

'We'll be in the library, Harry,' said Hermione firmly as she seized Ron above the elbow and dragged him off towards the marble staircase. Watching them go, Adalyn held back a snigger as Ron regretfully left his friend behind, obviously more interested in Harry and Cho then their homework.

'Had a good Christmas?' asked Cho.

'Yeah, not bad,' said Harry.
