Chapter 4

▫️▪️▫️▪️▫️GAGE▪️▫️▪️▫️▪️

I sat in a cage; very, VERY, high off of the ground. Like every other hopeless person here, my memories were wiped from my brain. Or so they thought. You see, I don't exactly know why, but when Doc. whatever said he wiped my memories, I still remembered. I remembered my little sister, only seven years old, in the arms of my mother, sobbing as we found out I was Chosen. I didn't cry. I never cry. I've lived a tough life and had to learn to be tough. This whole "Chosen" nonsense was just another bump in the road. Oh, and don't think that just because the memory erasing didn't work, doesn't mean that they didn't give me instincts.

After the Surgery, I was handed a live fish, it still wriggling helplessly in my hands. Before I knew what I was doing, I tore the fish apart with just my hands and stuffed it into my mouth. I didn't understand. I'd always hated fish, and here I was, digesting it raw. And I liked it. On top of that, the height of the cage didn't really bother me anymore. I looked around my cage. I saw a bird sitting leisurely on a branch to my right... right where it was before I left for the surgery. Must be a camera. Go figure.

I was already pretty sure what they were turning me into, I mean, it's pretty obvious. They were making me a bird, a superhuman hybrid bird to fight and kill and do whatever else they so wished of me. And the worst part? There was nothing I could do about it. But I sure as heck would try. I pressed a button labeled 'FOOD' and a raw fish was presented onto the floor to my left. I grabbed it, and fighting the urge to eat, threw it at the camera-bird. The bird fell right off its post to the ground with a satisfying crack. I smirked, glad to know I could do something small. Just then, three more birds were set onto the branches of the trees around me. Dang it. There was just no escape.

For the next few days, my life was routine and boring and lame. Everyday, I got up off the floor of the cage, tired eyed from lack of sleep. Three raw fish lay on the floor next to me and I chomp them down fast. I still am disgusted at myself for doing this, but it's all they feed me and I know they won't let me starve to death. On what seemed to be the sixth or seventh day after the surgery, I was taken out of my cage to another surgery room. The doctor called it 'Stage Two'. They knocked me out real good for the surgery, but when I woke again in my cage, my back felt as if there were a million flaming needles jabbed into two straight gashes just under my shoulder blades. Although I knew it would be painful, I reached my hand around to my bare back to feel the gashes. Upon a single touch, the pain was so excruciating I doubled over, crying out in agony. What did they do to me? I then realized another added feature: my eyesight. I could see everything perfectly, and not like 20 20 vision perfectly, like crazy vampiric perfectly. I'm not saying I like it... but hey, I'm not complaining. My eyes had never been too great, so this was a major improvement. I looked around my too-perfect-to-be-real forest of trees, and for the first time saw the entrance at the bottom. I saw a metal door and a small window.

Just then, I saw another person walking by, and at first I thought it was one of the scientists... but it wasn't. It was a beautiful girl, her features standing out in my new vision. I realized then that she was also Chosen, and by the looks of the men leading her forward, she must heading to Stage Two.
