The Garden

a penny

i would give you

     a penny

for your thoughts

but you don't seem quite

     willing

to let anyone

into your soul

     even with

an entrance fee

of one penny.

     offered

two pennies

a nickel

a dime

     a quarter

and still

you would not let

your thoughts

so i just sat down

and waited

     and waited

          and waited

until you were

ready

to tell me

     for no charge at all.
