The water was opaque

I couldn't see the bottom

So I jumped in

Watched as I lost sight

Of most of my body

You were sitting on the boat

About three feet away

Keeping an eye on me

So I wouldn't get lost

Lost where I couldn't be found

I was treading water

And my heart was accelerating

Simply because I had lost sight

Of the rest of my body

It was unnerving

You looked away for a minute

You knew I could swim

Besides, you didn't believe

In the fairy tales, the stories of people disappearing

Without a trace

I felt something brush my ankle

Soft and cold, sending a shiver

Up my spine

And I felt it wrap around my ankle

Soon I was pulled under

You looked back

Your heart sank to your stomach

And you felt the blood drain from your face

Then you closed your eyes, because the only thing left to do

Was to row away

I couldn't scream under the water

But I could still see the shadow

Of your boat

As it drifted out of sight

And I knew I was lost

I kept sinking

But I wouldn't look down

The thought was terrifying

You see, I didn't believe

The stories either

But with my last few minutes

I swore that  some stories shouldn't be

Ignored and dismissed

And I believed that given another chance

I'd steer clear of murky water
