The house was quiet, unusually quiet for the time of night. Violet should have been home hours ago, but she had yet to return from work. Zack paced from one room to the next wondering where she was and why she wasn’t answering her phone. He was seconds away from driving out to The Blue Rose to check and see if that Ben guy’s car was still there.

He knew that she dropped off her car at their house when she left Destiny with the woman. The only thing he didn’t know, was where exactly the couple lived. If he knew that, he would make a pit stop at their house to check on Violet’s whereabouts.

Anger and resentment welled up inside of him. They should be past the friend stage, God knows they had been there all their lives. She should be his by now!

He clenched the phone in his hand contemplating whether or not to call her again. With his teeth clenched tightly, he loosened his hold and unlocked the screen, the recently called list was already pulled up. His finger pushed Violet’s information a little too forcefully. If he didn’t watch it, he was going to wind up cracking the glass.

The sound of his foot tapping against the soft carpet filled his ears, along with the voicemail message. She was still not answering his call. Instead of hanging up the phone and redialing, Zack left Violet a message telling her to call him immediately. He was no longer pretending to be the sweet, caring boy she once knew. No, now he was removing the mask and letting her know that he was not happy with being ignored.

Ben’s eyes bounced back and forth between Violet and Katie, waiting for one of them to make a move. After the little session of truths and confessions, neither one of them had moved. Violet moved her hand and placed it against her heart, a small smile forming on her lips.

“What’s wrong, Vi?” Katie asked in a quiet voice.

“It’s my heart,” she responded, her eyes closing as she let out a deep breath. “It feels like it’s going to beat right out of my chest.”

The couple exchanged smirks and leaned closer to Violet, each one taking a hand in their own and placing them their chests. Violet smiled even bigger as she felt twin pulses that matched her own.

“This is surreal,” she puffed out in awe.

But before either one could respond, her phone interrupted. They tried to ignore it, pretend that it wasn’t blasting away in Violet’s pocket, as impossible as it seemed, they were able to tune it out.

After thirty minutes of trying, Violet pulled the phone out of her pocket and checked to see who wouldn’t leave them alone. She knew who it was, but had hoped that she was wrong. As soon as Zack’s number showed up, she tensed up. Maybe getting so wrapped up in the moment had been a bad idea. She was living with him, and she was trying to get over the irrational fear she had towards him. It wasn’t right for her to try and reform her relationship with him, then turn around and confess to feeling something for Ben and Katie. She was a morally corrupt freak.

Her hand shook as she lowered the phone and gripped it tightly in her palm. She should leave. She needed to leave. If she left right then, maybe he wouldn’t be too upset with her not coming home sooner.

“I’m sorry.” Violet slightly closed her eyes and bowed her head. “I think I need to get home, Zack-.”

“You don’t have to leave if you don’t want to,” Ben interjected. He wasn’t going to let her go back to the douchebag. Not if he could keep her from it. That was not trustworthy. Not in Ben’s opinion. He just had to keep the hatred he felt for the boy out of his voice. Which was easier said than done.

Violet heard the pent up hostility and shrank back from him. The reaction was uncalled for, and she instantly regretted the involuntary movement, but she couldn’t take it back. Their happy bubble had been popped and she doubted that it would return.
