Chapter 21:

Ashley visited me every chance she got for the next week until I was released from the hospital. My foot still ached when I put any pressure on it, but I could walk. The day I walked out of the hospital, Joyce and Earl were there to greet me at the main entrance. They took me back to their home where Officer Spick was waiting to congratulate me.

"You're a real hero, kid." He ruffled my hair.

And for once, I finally felt like it.

When I made it back to my bedroom, Ashley was sitting on my bed holding a small bouquet of flowers, beaming up at me as I hobbled into the room.

"Look," I said. "If you wanted me to buy you flowers, you could've said something."

"They're for you!" She laughed softly, then stood to meet me halfway. "Thank you. For everything."

"It was my pleasure." I told her. "I'd do it again if it turned out like this each time."

She smiled shyly and bit her lip. Ever so slowly, she raised herself onto her toes and leaned in close to me. My lips tingled and the hair on the back of my neck stood on end with anticipation.

"I was thinking," she said softly, her lips barely a breath away from mine. "That you might want this by now."

I could feel her lips before they touched mine, the electricity between us buzzed silently.

"You mean this one, right?" I teased.

"Shut up." She pressed her lips against mine softly. I placed my hands on her hips and felt her body shiver with delight. Mine did too.

"I think we have something here." I said between kisses.

"Me too." She gently rested her hands on my chest and moved closer. Sliding her hands down, I felt a beautiful sensation fill my body.

Then she touched my ribcage.

"OUCH!" I jerked away from her. "Hey!"

"Sorry!" She brought a hand to her lips. "I forgot."

"I noticed." I winced and waited for the pain to subside. Ashley kissed me again, filling me with her warmth, almost overpowering the now-dull throbbing in my side.

"You're almost as eager as I am." I smiled.

"Shut up." She smiled back. "I love you."

"I love you too."

And then our life started together, with ups and downs, but never anything we couldn't handle. I made her my wife, my companion, and the mother of our child. As the years went on, I fell even more deeply in love with her and her quirks, and light. I couldn't have asked for a better woman to spend the rest of my life with.
