“I’m sorry Sis” Melissa screamed as she came to an abrupt halt even though in her mind, she knew her sister would never know what had happened or been said. She had run as fast as her body would allow the pain in her side would attest to that. All that running and energy did her no good. She looked up the steps of the courthouse. There was nowhere left to go. The converts were coming at her from all directions. Perhaps she thought just maybe; I could get inside before they catch up. It could buy me the time to get away. Knowing she had only a few seconds to spare she dashed up the stairs trying to find a way into the building. Just as she thought there was no hope the doors swung open and two hands yanked her inside before she had a chance to register what had happened.

“Thank you, but that was a very dangerous thing to do.” Melissa began as she reached her feet.

“You’re welcome but it wasn’t as big a risk as you think. I’ve already been converted. My mind just doesn’t suffer the madness from which most of the converts suffer from. Furthermore, I don’t have the craving.”

“Still I’ll always be grateful. If you ever need help I’ll be more than willing to give it.” Melissa countered as she thought about the ramifications of what he just said.

“I have no problem telling people to watch out, but why waste your time on me? There are people of power and importance who could use your help. Why me?” Melissa asked.

“Each person saved is one more in the fight against the evil. That makes everyone important.” The stranger spoke up.

“What good is a position without the mind to use it? Why not save them?”

“None! Those who began this can’t afford for that to happen, so key people are kept safe.” The stranger answered. “I must go. Others may be in need of help. Avoid the dark. Sunlight is safer.”

“Hold on before you leave, you said you have already been converted. What do you mean? I thought all converts were insane like those out there. How long ago? How can we stop this madness? Do you even want to stop it?” Melissa blurted out the most prominent questions in her mind. Not sure what else to do and hoping he had the answers.

“Short versions, those out there are what full vampires call slaves. Full vampires normally control them and stop this from happening. I don’t know the complete story; I have only been a vampire three days. However, after I was bitten, I wandered around until a full vampire found me, he showed me how to control the slaves, at least enough to send them away. It told me vampires have always existed beside humans unknown to us. He told me that some of them wanted to take over and had set free a bunch of slaves. The bite of a slave if deadly can cause you to become either a vampire or a slave. There is no way to tell which way your mind will go with the conversion. He is fighting against the take over and asked me to help by saving as many people as possible and warning them as I did you.”

“So I was right they really are vampires? I need garlic and holy water and…” Melissa began.

“You need sunlight and any weapon that will penetrate the heart or remove the head. Any religious weapon from any religion will repel them as long as the person blessing or creating them truly is a follower of that religion. That is all I know. When the battle is under control I have a place to meet him again and learn what my new life will be like.” That said the stranger turned and left at a speed so fast it startled Melissa.

Melissa stared after the stranger wondering what to make of his story. Many believed that all converts were evil. She wasn’t sure. Realizing where she was, Melissa quickly headed for home. She was afraid the others would come back or that this was some sort of trick. As she entered her quarters and secured the doors behind her, Melissa finally began to relax. Although she didn’t fully relax until she had completely checked to be sure she was alone.
