The room was dimly lit. It had to be to allow for the sensitivity of the eyes of many people gathered there. The conclave meeting was usually held once a year but was now meeting weekly. Members of the conclave and guests were no longer satisfied with the way things were. Changes were coming, and it wasn’t going to be easy.

“What are you crazy? We have been safe and lived alongside the humans for centuries. The days of being hunted and fears of discovery are long past. Now you want to instigate a plan that will start it all over.” Max yelled at the assembled group.

“We don't want to restart it. The humans have spread all over the globe they bicker among themselves are disorganized and are killing our planet. Something has to be done to restore the balance. If they are allowed to kill off themselves and their food sources, then we too will die. Without the feeding, we will no longer be ourselves. You know what happens to those who try to skip the feeding and allow themselves to become frenzied. No matter what we have tried we can never make them well again.” Cant replied.

Max was tired of the arguing. Yes, he agreed something had to be done and the work behind the scene though slow was progressing. This groups plan is totally unnecessary and dangerous. It would ruin thousands of years of safety. Few humans could battle the fear and withstand known alliances with them. Human nature fears what they can’t control or what they don't understand. That is why the human's sciences and technology advanced so fast. They are constantly battling to overcome preconceived fears.

“Then we, my friend, are due to repeat history. The slaves will run wild. The humans will once again fear us. We will be at their mercy once more. You will see and the clean up this time will not be as easy.” Max argued.

“We have to put a stop to it, before they kill us all. If ruling the humans is the only way to control them, then it is something we must do.” Cant replied. Cant was someone to be feared, even if he was one of the youngest in the room. In the eighty years since his birth, he climbed through varies means to the heights of power.

“The humans will not bow to be ruled.  Even if you think it is for their own good, they will fight you every step of the way.”  Max warned them as he slammed out the door of the small log cabin they had used for centuries as their meeting place.

He had to warn his human family. Then he had to go into seclusion for the feeding. Hopefully, the curse would be lifted before the chaos broke loose. Max knew he must hurry before the frenzy hit him, the urge to kill was getting strong,

Soon he would have to perform the feeding before he lost control. The feeding was controlled by others. They stopped a vampire from taking too much blood and forcing a change on the donor. Replacing each donor as needed until the urge was filled. Human myth listed vampires as monsters who had to feed constantly to survive. The truth was vampires were as varied in needs to feed as humans were in their need to eat. Some vampires eat a little while others eat a lot. The newly created vampire had to feed more often than an older vampire. Max only needed to feed about once every five years.

The myth grew out of contact with the slaves. In the old days, the vampires had less control and had created a lot of slaves. Then they had learned like every civilization before and since them to control the unwanted elements of their society. They could feed without killing. By doing this, they could control their own expansion. This worked in about the same way as the birth control pill for humans. Just like in humans there were those vampires that refused to follow this guideline. And those who wanted to return to the old ways. This is where the vampire hunters entered the picture. As long as a vampire was living peacefully they were allowed to do so, but if they went on a killing spree, the hunters would hunt them and end the spree. Max knew the hunters were a needed part of society and never faulted them for their job. He still felt himself grimace at the thought of having to take the life of a human or a vampire.
