1) A mistake which many ordinary people make is quite simple. They reley too heavily on the eyes to make deductions. The eyes only reveal a small fraction of the truth, while body language and voice pitch and tone, along with many other factors will reveal the full truth.

2) If a person leans back while talking or telling a possible lie, then it is more likely that what they are saying is not true, or that they are witholding information.

3) If someone seems panicked or anxious when you ask where they were at a certain time, they are trying to hide something. For example:

"Where were you on Friday afternoon?"

"Friday afternoon? Oh, I was uh, at the movies."

4) When someone is trying to make up a story about where they have been, (for example, if they are avoiding you,) they will often repeat parts of the question.
"Where were you on Friday afternoon?"
"On Friday afternoon? Oh, I was at Mary's house."

5) If a person's eyes move around or focus on different parts of the room while talking to you, but never meet your eyes, then they are most likely feeling guilty about something or hiding something.
