Chapter 1 – The Fall of Despera

“This way!” screamed a man, covered with burns and bruises, as he escorted the children and the elderly towards the emergency exit of the town. They immediately followed him, but before they were able to reach the exit, a large ball of fire hit the half of them, leaving the children screaming because of fear. Some of them were badly injured, while some were already dead.

“Mother!” cried the young girl, as she tried to revive the dead woman by weakly shaking her body.

“Come here. Your mother is dead,” another man said, trying to grab the girl away from the battle field, but the girl resisted.

“I won’t leave my mother!”

A lady with black, curly hair approached them. She smirked, and said mockingly “Then don’t. Follow after her.”

The man’s eyes flew open, his lips slightly parted.

“Don’t touch the girl. She has nothing to do with this,” he stood up, and faced the woman fearlessly.

As soon as the lady began to play her flute, the man, as fast as he could, pulled out his flute as well and blocked the fire emitted because of the woman’s harmony. The lady was shocked, but showed her mocking smile again.

“I see,” she said softly. “Ad Lucem.”

The man slightly gave a laugh. “Yes, you’re right.”

The woman prepared herself. “Then it’s time to end this.”

She played an odd harmony which gave strange shivers down the man’s spine. She looked at her sharply, and directed her flute towards the girl.

“Don’t—“

He ran as fast as he could to save the child, and he never failed. The girl was in front of him, still crying, and never understood what was going on around her. The man felt the attack hit his back after a fraction of a second right after he stood there to shield the girl.

His back became slightly numb, and the cold pain started there, and he never thought that his death would be this fast. The ice cold feeling approached his heart, and he felt that all of his warm blood vanished. He tried to draw a smile to cheer up one last time the crying girl.

“Mister, are you alright?” the girl innocently asked.

Without saying anything, he just weakly nodded, and feeling the gravity pulling down his limp body, he fell down, his crashing body creating a loud noise. He slightly rolled, and planted a sweet kiss on the ground. Before darkness enveloped his vision, there were two things he clearly heard. One was the screaming voice of the child, and second was the word the woman spoke just right above him.

“Weak.”

He smiled. Sacrificing one’s life to his town is a sign of bravery, not a weakness, he thought. Forgive me Despera. I was not able to lift you up from the darkness. And peace finally calmed him.

--

Despite the loud noise and the devastating condition of Despera, a woman was seen briskly walking, avoiding the attacks from their opponent. While walking, a dozen of daggers from her back attacked her, missing her by inches. When she looked back, she saw a man smirking at her.
