____________CHAPTER FOUR______________

“Here we are!” Clara announced, pushing the door to her Ute and stepping out. I followed her lead and slid out of my seat and onto the hard terrain. Red dust immediately clung to my shoes and the flies attacked all at once. I swatted at the irritably but Clara just ignored them.

“Home sweet home.” Clara sighed, breathing in deeply. I didn’t bother to reply, I would only end up with flies in my mouth. I squinted through the harsh sunlight and got my first proper look at my new ‘home’.

It was a fairly large house, but the land surrounding it was huge. Clara told me on the way up here she didn’t even know where most of the boundaries were, that it just kind of all blended in. Dirt tracks and streams ran through everywhere, there was shrubs and bush land that probably had hundreds of kangaroo’s jumping through them. Paddocks filled with livestock and a horse stable. It was … amazing. I’d never seen anything like it.

Clara walked up the little stone path to her house and I quickly followed. I eyed quad bikes. Oh my god. Awesome! Once, when I went with the academy on the yearly summer vacation, James, Kylie, Adam and I raced the quad bikes along the beach. Best day ever! Kylie and Adam trash talked each other on how good they both were then ended up crashing simultaneously, almost totaling the Quad’s. Ah, young love. As much as they hate to admit it, they are made for each other.

I dusted off my shoes and left them by the front door. Not to sound like a princess, but man, they were expensive shoes. Not Jimmy Choos or anything, just really comfy walking boots. I hope the dirt doesn’t ruin them. The moment I stepped into the house I was just about knocked over. A little ball of fur slammed into my legs and I looked down at it, surprised.

Scuttling around on the hardwood floors was a young Border Collie running around madly. It was as though it hadn’t seen someone for years on end. The little puppy just didn’t quite know what to do with itself. I laughed as I watched it run around in circles. Another dog trotted up to me, this one calm and collected. An adult Border Collie. He padded up to me curiously and I gently held my hand out for it to sniff. It gave me the green light and I went ahead and patted it. Okay, I have a massive soft spot for animals.

“What’s his name?” I asked, kneeling on my knees to pat the dog better and looking up at Clara.

“That he is a she and her name is Mitch as in Michelle. And this one here,” Clara bent down to pick up the hyper active puppy with a little grunt of effort, “Is her puppy Dex.” She struggled to keep the wriggly thing from escaping her arms, “He’s a right handful. Mitch helps out on the farm and we’re trying to teach Dex here as well but …” She trailed off frowning, put you could tell she was fond of the little fur ball.

I smiled and stood up to face Clara, “So is this the house then?” I asked.

Clara grinned back, “In all it’s glory. Let’s go round and give you a tour aye?”

I followed Clara around the house as she pointed out each room, “That’s the kitchen, storeroom, laundry room, my room and … your room.” She said, opening the door to my new room.
