Dearly Departed

I woke up to see my aunt hovering over me, writing her hands together, brows furrowed in worry.

"Are you alright, Kiera?" Aunt Lynn asked. "This hasn't happened in a while. I thought you were better."

"I'm...no, yeah, I'm fine. I don't know what came over me, there. It's fine. I just forgot. I woke up, and I felt like everything was normal. I just forgot," I repeated. "How...how could I forget?"

"Kiera," my aunt began in a firm voice," how many times must we go over this? It wasn't your fault. You were very lucky to be alive, and that is that. Come on. Get up, now, dear." She grunted as she dragged me up from the floor. "We'll go pick up Uncle Henry and visit your parents before we go get dinner."

I nodded, mute. Dinner? I was out for a while.

As we left the house, I threw a glance backward. And I saw it. My piano. My beautiful, precious, one-of-a-kind grand piano. It was just sitting there in my aunt's living room, gathering dust. I hadn't touched it in four years. My fingers itched to play it once more. But...I couldn't. No. I dragged my gaze away and stiffly marched out the door.

My parents and siblings had been cremated. Their ashes were kept in neat little boxes in a building by the cemetery. We drove there in silence.

After we arrived, we walked towards the small locker where the boxes were stored. I took them out, examining them.

Each box had a picture of one of my family members, smiling up at me. I picked up the boxes, one by one, and taking my time, dusted them off. Then, I kissed each box and set them back in the locker.

"I love you," I whispered.

The rest of the day passed in a blur, and before I knew it, I was back in bed.

As was my tradition, I lay down and went on a trek through my memories. I remembered my parents, my siblings, as they had been. Their laughs, their smiles, their quirks, and their love, I had engraved in my heart, never to be forgotten.

Sighing, I closed my eyes. "I love you," I repeated.
