"Wow," Elaine said. She was startled, remembering the newspaper item she'd seen on the computer.
"I'm surprised you didn't run into each other." She recovered.
"Well, it's a good-sized hospital. As a matter of fact, that's where Steve and I met."
"I didn't know that," Elaine said. "Was he sick?"
"Appendectomy. Speaking of hospitals, I've got to go in for a couple of hours this afternoon."
"I thought you were off today."
"I was, but one of the girls called in sick so I said I'd do her shift."
"Aren't you sweet."
"Just like candy. You know, Elaine, I'm beginning to feel a little nosy. I mean, where are we going with all this stuff about Paula?"
"Yeah, I guess - but I was getting kind of a buzz playing detective."
Elaine wasn't ready to talk to Cassie about the information she'd found concerning her closest friend.
