Jeff was walking ahead of me and I thought about what would happen if I would suddenly turn around and run away. But then I realized that I couldn’t because he would look at me every now and then as if to check that I’m still behind him.

“Where are we going?” I ask.

“Somewhere,” he casually replied.

After a few minutes, I asked, “Are we there yet?”

I heard him let out a loud sigh, “No, not yet,”

A few minutes later, I asked again, “We there yet?”

His voice raised a bit, “No, not yet,”

A few minutes later, I asked again, “Are we—“

“NO! Okay? Not yet! Would we still be walking if we reached our destination already? Would we, smart-ass?! No! So just shut up and follow me!” he yelled.

I fell silent. But I didn’t stay that way for long, “We there yet?”

“BWAAAAAAAARGGH!!!” he screamed before punching the nearest tree. I forgot to mention, Jeff was leading me inside a very thick forest that is known in our area as a forest wherein monsters reside. He gave me a sharp look.

“Okay, I know. I was just messing with you. I’ll shut up now,” I laughed.

Laughing was an odd and new feeling to me but I didn’t seem to dislike it. I looked at Jeff even if he had his back on me. It was because of him that I was able to become like this. If he didn’t break in our house and murdered my family, I would never have been free from the repeating cycle of my monotonic lifestyle. I would’ve never been able to rip open their chests and eat their hearts which would lead to me still not being able to feel any emotion at all. As strange as it may sound, I am thankful for what Jeff had done.

“What is it?” Jeff asked as he was looking at me. He must’ve noticed me looking at him.

I shook my head with a smile on my lips, “It’s nothing,”

He gave me a suspicious look before shrugging off and looked in front of him. Then he came to a halt.

“What’s wrong, Jeff?” I ask as I peered behind him.

“We’re here,” he answered.

“We’re here?” I repeated. In front of us were trees that never seemed to come to an end and an old well.

Jeff then walked to the well and beckoned for me to follow him.

“Come on,” he says and prepared to jump inside the well. I’m not kidding. He was really planning to jump inside it.

“Ummm,”

“Stop standing there and come on!” he commanded.

Who made him boss?

I grumbled and did what he did which was to sit on the edge of the well. He took me by surprise when he grabbed my waist and pulled me close. I look up to him and he flashed a grin.

“Hold on tight. It’s gonna be a bumpy ride,”

Once again, I was thankful that the emotions I have were limited because if it wasn’t, I’m sure as hell that I would be screaming my lungs out. Seriously, though. The inside of the well was unexpectedly long and maze like. The end of the maze-like well, however, clearly defied the rule of gravity when instead of continuously going down and deep into the earth, we were shooting up to the surface. I closed my eyes to adjust from the light and when I opened them, the sight took my breath away.

Snow was everywhere and was falling from the dark-gray skies. The same trees were everywhere and turning around, I saw a house. No, it wasn’t a house; it was a huge dark mansion.

“Where the hell are we?” I asked with a soft meek voice.

Jeff looked at me in the eye and grinned. “We’re home,”

Jeff then let go of my waist and yanked my wrist, pulling me forward as we walked towards the mansion. I looked at Jeff and I couldn’t help but wonder if he was a rich kid since he was living in such a grand-looking mansion. I looked back to the well and my thoughts raced. Maybe we just entered another dimension?

When we reached the gates, there was a creature that I couldn’t understand which greeted Jeff with a loud bark and then jumped on him. I then realized that it was a dog – a huge red dog with an eerie smile on its face.

“I’m back, Smile!” Jeff greeted as he laughed and tried to get the huge dog off of him, “Get off me you gigantic mutt!”

I couldn’t help but smile. The dog then did as he was told and then looked my way. I just stood there and look at it.

“Smile, that’s Calliope; Calliope, this is my Smile Dog,” Jeff said as he patted the dog. Smile barked at me in a friendly way as he wagged his tail.

“You have one strange dog,” I commented and Jeff laughed.

“Come on, I’ll introduce you to the rest,” he smiled.

Well someone’s definitely cheery today.

I sighed and followed the two creatures before me walk past the gate and head to two dark mahogany double doors.
