Shattered Fragments

My life has flashed before my eyes
more times than I can remember.
I'm brought to my childhood;
simple, happy memories entwined with
the sound of carefree laughter ringing through the air.
The broken fragments piece themselves together
creating scenes of joyous innocence before it was lost.
The motion picture flips abruptly,
screams of terror ring through the air.
Smoke fills my lungs,
the acrid scent burns as it's forced down.
Pain engulfs my psyche all over again;
I'm forced to relive this nightmare.
The images blurs as flashes of buried memories are brought to the surface:
my father beaten to death for sharing his rations,
my sister before forced down the steps to her impending death,
watching as body after body were tossed aside.
The flashes become sluggish as my mind struggles to continue on.
Silence rings through my ears.
And then...nothing.
No more flashes of vibrant colour.
No more painful memories.
No. More. Anything.
Just peace and quiet. Black Silence.
