Sitting in a room

All alone

There is no heater

Chilled to the bone

I look out the window

At the stars so bright

Wishing I could be

At a party tonight

I wasn’t bad looking

Pretty indeed

But we are poor

So no jewels do I see

I daydream a lot

Of a ballroom with beauty

Gold and silver

A whole lot of booty (money)

As I did housework

I daydreamed of stew

But then husband came in

As if on cue

“My dearest” he says

“Have something for you

There is a party

Beginning at two!”

But I am not thankful

I burst out in tears

I would never

Be welcomed near

Such a place

Of very high class

Where tickets are limited

As we got the last

I turn away quickly

He made me depressed

I am not worth it

My luck has shown less

If I deserved it

I could go everyday

But I am a servant

Have money only saved

“No dress!” I cry out

As my husband comes near

I whine and beg

Too much to bear

For his simple ears

To her his wife sad

“How much money?

I’ll provide please be glad.”

So I think for awhile

And call out a number

My husband faints

But wakes up from his slumber

To send me away

To shop for something nice

Finally I will not have something

Invested with lice

After a beautiful

Evening dress is bought
