Chapter 4

Getting off at a stop called Ardinglam, Kitty clipped her feet across the pavement. The agency that her mum had told her about was situated just around the corner and she could feel the nerves hit her like a tonne of bricks. This was it, maybe she could finally find out about her blood brother.

Kitty had known about her brother for a long time. Her parents had told her about him when they told her about the adoption. She loved that about her parents, they were so open, but she knew that they wouldn't trade her for the world. Long story short, Kitty had been trying to find her brother for years now and this was just the break she was after. There were numerous adoption agencies in Quebert, but none had supplied her with the information that she needed. Her mum telling her what agency had narrowed her search immensely.

Walking along the pavement, she came to a stop in front of an office block. The entrance was black and there were no lights on in the building, but the hazy street lamps behind her. Cursing, Kitty remembered that it was late at night and of course, the place would be shut. She was curious though, this could be the key to finding her brother.

Pushing her nose up against the glass doors, she let condensation form in a bubble around her face, turning the glass opaque. The place was ordinary looking, a little run down due to the lack of funding, but what could you expect of an adoption agency?

Looking in at all the leaflets scattered across the walls by the reception desk, Kitty sighed. She knew what she was after, an address, a number. Anything really, that would help her track down her brother. Kitty was, of course, interested in her real parents, but they had after all decided to put her up for adoption whereas her brother, like herself, had no choice.

Shuddering, Kitty clutched her shoulders, the street was dark and damp, puddles scattered in potholes and the cold was penetrating through her leather jacket. The surroundings were ominous, not one car passed her and everyone was shut up in their houses in fear of the gangs that roamed the city with a vengeance.

Looking once again into the agency, she tapped the glass impatiently. Considering that there was no one there, she was forced to come back tomorrow. Not something that she wanted to waste time on, but she had no choice.

"Sorry dear, we're closed for the night," a womanly voice startled her, Kitty's heart racing as she spun around in utter shock at the sound of someone else's voice.

Before her stood a young woman, carrying a pile of folders in one arm while struggling with her oversized handbag and car keys in the other. Kitty couldn't make out much of the woman's appearances in the dark, but she could tell the woman was dressed businesslike and her hair was wrapped up into a bun at the top of her head.

"We open at nine," the woman spoke again, sounding somewhat agitated that Kitty had not spoken yet.

"Oh," Kitty murmured, cupping her elbow nervously, for a reason she didn't really understand, "Um, what time do you close?"

"Five pm sharp."

Nodding slowly, Kitty racked over her brain and realised she could possibly make it back here in time tomorrow before it closed, "Can I ask a quick question though, while you're here?" She looked back to the woman who looked like she just wanted to get out of here and go home.
