William Carlos Williams saw a flash of gold that impressed him so much, he pulled out a piece of paper and wrote 'The Great Figure.'

His short poem, influential and intriguing, inspired me. For in this fast-paced environment, where we are a mess of comings and goings, it is inherent that we should be a flash of gold bypassing somebody else, someday. Whether we know it or not, we are all a snippet, a flash, a number five.

Among the people

and shadows

I saw a young women

in black

upon the grimy

ground

listening

tense

unheeded

to midnight banter

desperate pleas

and shoes trudging

through the dark alley.

Williams' left me so very few words to play with, otherwise it is very likely the young women in black would have seeped across the page in a more substantial way. She is very real to me. She won't leave my mind.
