 “What Mother?”

“Oh nothing.”

“It’s obviously something.”

“I just don’t see how you thought this was a good idea.”

“It’s a perfect Idea.”

“So you’re just going to patch up this rat hole, put some vintage furniture in here and call it art?”

“Not at all!”

“Bay, you’re a fashion designer not a house designer.”

“I can be whatever the hell I want!”

“Language young lady.”

“I’m twenty-five.”

“Still a baby in my eyes.”

I gave a grunt of disapproval and circle in place to survey my new apartment another time.

“I don’t see how you can even call this place a home, I mean look at it!” My mother squawks

 “Just wait.”

“Oh I am.”

“Why are you here mother?”

“I wish you would call me mom,”

“Why would I call you that?”

“Because mother sounds like you’re mad at me.”

“Maybe I am mad at you.”

“This? This again Bay? Get over yourself girl! It was one stupid mistake.”

“It was a marriage!”

“You always got along better with your father.”

“That’s because he didn’t pick favorites.”

“He picked you children over me!”

“Because you’re a-“

“Stop it.”

“Okay mom, why are you here?”

“To work the power tools since you don’t like loud noises,”

“Don’t like? Mom, I have Hyperacusis!”

“A mild case.”

“But still!”

“Stop being so dramatic Bay! Honestly!”

“I can do it myself mother, I’m twenty-five and-“

“Yes, yes you’re twenty-five and a big girl in the big bad world who calls her dearest mom mother and refuses the help of those who love her.”

I glare at my mother until she gets up and waddles into another room. Probably to inspect the crumbling carpet.

“How was the wedding?” my mother calls from the other room,

“It didn’t happen.” I mutter knowing exactly where this argument is heading.

“Again? Bay, you’ve got to stop running away from your fears and face them head on!”

“You never did that.”

“Did so.”

“What about Jason? And Evan? At least I have the decency to end one relationship before starting the next.”

“You’re father wasn’t a saint either!”

“That’s not the point!”

“He cheated first, if he hadn’t done it that first time Jason and Evan would never have come into the picture!”
