Road Trip

Harry: he turned the knob, volume up as he spun one hand around the steering wheel, the highway open to you both, “I’m really glad we’re doing this…" he smiled over the console, threading your hand with his. "Me too," you shuffled in your seat, the sun still rising and the sleeves of his hoodie jetting down your arms, a few sizes too big. You smiled the way he did, clinging hands and threading fingers, nothing but the road ahead. You squinted, changing the song over, The Vaccines playing, Harry patting his palm down the dashboard to the bass, “by the way, we have to stop for snacks…" you smiled wider, “we can’t have a road trip without snacks." "Then snacks we will get, babe," he broke a grin, the engine beneath you both, day peeling out like the skin of a banana, words wriggling into jumbled games and laughter, destination not even the reason.

Liam: you swung into the passenger seat, watching him bent over the petrol gauge, “we should stop and fill up before we hit the highway, babe," he ran a hand past his hair, ruffling it back, “that way, we won’t have to stop later," he looked up, smiling, “what do you think, babe?" "Sounds good," you grinned, waiting for the click of your seatbelt. You reached over and ran a hand down where he’d run his, brushing his hair back again, “this’ll be fun…" "Yeah, it will be," he closed the driver’s side door, and ran the engine, “so we’ve got everything?" "We…" you glanced around the car, the backseat, smiling into taking his hand, “have everything…" "Then," he pulled the car into reverse, grinning, “let’s go…"

Louis: "Are we thinking some Katy Perry, babe?" He laughed, slipping the third CD in, music still drumming through your ears but it didn’t matter so much, singing off-key, the day ahead, and you’d both had enough sugar. He kept reaching over the console, to take your hand and kiss the knuckles. "Sounds good," you picked up a CD case from the floor, easing it open and pressing the last CD in there carefully. When you leant back, the car seat was warm. "Getting hungry, babe?" "Yeah, a little," you smiled lightly, leaning back, the leather of the seat still warm from the sun shining down, a day almost done and you were both excited for the next, and the next. The road seemed longer when you watched it, stretching out before you, like some huge expanse crazier than the ocean.

Zayn: you were half-asleep, listening to the sounds of cars jostling either side, the road beneath you, bumping a little but you had Zayn’s sweater up against the window, and your fist curled near the sleeve, “how are you doing, babe? Did you want me to drive a bit?" You turned enough to see his eyes in the dark when he answered. "No, it’s okay, babe," he reached over, and took your hand, “you just get some sleep. I’ll be good…" "You sure?" You shuffled a bit, “cause I can…" "Just get some sleep, babe," he blinked a little, and smiled, lights shining brighter whenever you passed them, the highway lights hanging down from great poles on the sides of the road. You blinked, before closing your eyes again, nestling, hands scrunched up to the sweater you were using as a pillow.

Niall: "Babe, we gotta start rockin’ the Bon Jovi," he laughed over, from turning the wheel, taking your hand again and easing it up, so he could press your finger to press the power button on the radio, “I’m in the mood…" "I’m sure you are," you giggled over, blushing down when he winked at you. He ran a hand through his hair, settling back in the car seat, one hand steady on the wheel, the entire time. He laughed over, and you played the music eventually, singing loudly to each other, the windows down so when you stopped at each traffic light before the road out, everyone around you could hear the music, the singing, so loud and buried in laughter. It was warm when you were driving, sun shining, and it was tranquil. "This is really nice, babe," he smiled over in the end, “it’s really nice…"
