If I Should Have A Daughter

If I should have a daughter
I will teach her about love first
So that when she encounters hate
She will have every defense against it.
I will show her the stars
And let her count them so she knows the endless possibilities that will be welcomed to her in this world.
I will break off a piece of the sun and slip it into her pocket
So that even on her darkest nights
Everything is a little bit brighter
Even on her coldest days everything's a little bit warmer.
I will teach her that a frown uses more muscles than a smile
And that donuts are so worth the calories.
I will teach her that
She doesn't have have to be small
That she can be
The stars and the galaxies
She will know
That I too
Get sad sometimes
And nothing is ever written in stone
That sometimes the ocean washes it away.
She will know the world
And all that comes with it.
But she will also know
She is always welcome home
And no matter how far her little feet have traveled
No matter how many sights her big eyes have captured.
There will always be a new adventure waiting just around the corner.
She will learn about heartache
I won't have to teach her that
She will learn about hopelessness
And heart break
But she will know
That it's okay to cry
It doesn't last forever
She will know that
Love is small
But it'll make you feel so big
Or it'll make you feel so small.
She will know what flowers feel like
What the wind tastes like.
She will never have to swallow the words her mouth want so desperately to spit out
And she will be free.
Wild and free
And careful and happy.
She will be happy.
