Neil and Chester West were born during the Great Depression. Their family was poor, and when their parents died, the twins were sent off to work for a rich family. The boys are happily surprised when they find out that the family they are sent to, the Harrisons, have two twin daughters: Stella and Lily. As the boys clean everything in the house, from the fireplace which sends mysterious echoes when you shout up it to Mr. Harrison's spectacles, they become great friends with the young mistresses of the house. Together, they run through the woods and accompany the cook to the marketplace, as well as getting on old Widow Picker's nerves. After some time, the boys realize something: they didn't just find friends and a place to stay, they found a family. But can this last, as World War II itches closer?
