I stared at the phone screen in disbelief hoping that I might come out of my dream and be in my bed safe from Death itself, but then the unexpected happened.

Kwame grabbed my phone and dragged me into one of the empty bedrooms, which accounted for a lower noise level. He then answered it, and started speaking to my mother. "Hello? Mrs. Olson?" He said as I stared in disbelief.

Then the phone went to speaker and I heard both sides of the exchange. "Hello, who is this?" she asked, clearly annoyed.

"My name is Kwame Okari."

He was so articulate, and I couldn't stop gaping as I watched his lips form the words to speak to my mother. All of a sudden, he reached his hand out and gently touched my face, placing a hand at the bottom of my jaw to close my mouth.

I wanted to just lean into him, melt into his hands, and disappear.

"Come again?" she said suddenly.

"I said my name is-"

"You're male?" she interjected with bewilderment lacing her voice.

Laugh lines fanned out around his eyes as he giggled a little before reasserting himself. "Ma'am I can assure you that your daughter still has her purity intact. We were just talking at Farah's house. She almost had a panic attack when she saw you show up on the Caller ID of her cell phone," he explained.

"I wasn't implying that Wylan did have coitus with you, young man. My daughter has spoken of her disdain for you many times. I just find it odd that my daughter is actually interacting with anyone of the opposite sex."

He looked at me, smirking. I rolled my eyes and walked over to the bed in the corner. "Well, I'm going to hand the line over to Wylan, so I guess this is until next time Mrs. Olson." He approached me with the phone as I hissed.

"No, no just ugh," I complained.

He stood in front of me waiting expectantly. "Talk to her, she's calm," he whispered. Yeah, she's calm with you. My mother could fool the Angels in Heaven if it were possible.

I blinked, taking a deep breath and grabbing the phone, "Yes, ma'am?"

She replied immediately, "Wylan Sinead Olson, tell me why I should not light a fire under you." There's no Once Upon a Time in prison, Mom.

Kwame heard this quid pro quo since the phone was still on speaker and he was still in front of me. He tried stifling a laugh, but there was a glint of unmistakable amusement in his eyes.

"I'm sorry, I just...I made a bad decision," I whispered, trying to keep my voice from breaking.

"Yeah, you sure did! Just imagine what would happen if I told your father that you snuck out, and you were with a boy! You know that when it comes to him, teenage boys are the equivalent of the Antichrist, Wylan!"
