"In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years"

Abraham Lincoln

Dylan’s POV

I stood on the edge of the lake, throwing rocks into the lake. The rocks jumped up and down in the lake, causing ripples in the water. The sunset glistened on the water. It’s pink and orange colors shining in a burst of colors.

“Skipping rocks again?” I heard someone call.

I turned. “What? It’s the only way to remember my parents.”

Naomi walked up to me. “Dylan, that’s almost seven years ago.”

I turned back to the water. Sparkles shone like stars as the calm wind pushed the water in rippling effects. I sat down and put my feet in the water. Naomi sat down next to me. Tears ran down my face. Naomi wrapped her hand around mine.

“You can’t let the past get to you. Sure, there are things we want to bring back, but we can’t.”

“My parents taught me who I should be now,” I looked out to the water.

Naomi sighed. “My mom died the same way,” I looked back at her. “She taught me the same thing. Respect the right people. My dad is a drunk now, but, the only thing I have to remember her by is this,” She showed me a necklace. It was silver and it had Naomi’s name hanging from the chain in a cursive writing. “She got me this for my eleventh birthday. I’ve worn it every day, even when she was still alive. I mean, I didn’t lose both my parents, but I feel the same way. I’m hurt on the inside, too.”

I looked back at the water. “I just can’t let it go,” I whispered.

“I can’t either. You remember the first day I met you? I fell in love with you in an instant. That’s sort of weird to hear that, but I love you, Dylan. You’re the nicest guy I know.”

I got up and headed back to the house. Naomi ran up behind me. She turned me around and gave me a deep kiss. I pulled away after two seconds of it.

“How dare you?” I screamed at her.

She looked at the ground nervously. “I – I’m sorry.”

“You shouldn’t sorry!” I stormed off into the woods.

Naomi called after me. I ignored her calls and kept going. I reached the tree I had terrible memories at. The last time I visited here, I wrapped a rope in a noose. I climbed the tree and reached the branch below the noose. Naomi came into view. Tears ran down my face as I grabbed the noose and put it around my neck. I took one last breath, and jumped.
