Open House

I long to be the house
That is always open.
The house with the good snacks
Always stocked
The house where my children
Can holler
"Mom, Mark's with me!"
As they walk through the door
Instead of asking
"Can Mark please come over today?"
I want to the the house that everyone
Knows the garage code to
And the door is always unlocked.
I want to be a home,
Always open,
For anyone and everyone.

And yet,
I am so tired.
Even my bones are worn down
I cannot endure entertaining
For a moment more.
How many people must I smile at
And how many more must I hug
Before I can finally be alone
And at peace.

I long for solitude in a home
That is my own.
