Xander pulled his legs to his chest, scraping them through the pool of his own blood, and stood up.

"You-"

"I always knew you would come for me," he said, staring at Xander. "But do you really know what you are doing?"

The words hung in the air, and Selene, frightened that Hector would say something that she would never recover from, moved towards him. His eyes flashed in her direction.

"And you" - he looked her up and down, his eyes brimming over with an unsatiated desire - "the woman I always wanted. What have you come for? To kill me? To seduce me? Te let me finally have my way with you? Look at you now" - he laughed - "so pale and evanescent. Pathetic."

Xander lunged with his blood covered hands, but Hector dodged out of the way.

"Do you think you can kill me with your blood?" He cackled, and Xander stopped, his features contorting with incomprehension.

"It's poisonous," he said, moving forward again.

"No to me." Hector stood up straight and slid his hands into his pockets, rocking on his heels.

His handsome face was shadowed with evil intent, his eyes burning with hatred and lust intertwined.

Selene, desperate that he should not reveal the truth to Xander, ran at him, her fists beating the air, but Hector caught and held her tight with a superhuman strength that matched her own.

"Do you love him?" he asked, shaking her violently so that her bones threatened to break apart and rattle together. "Do you?"

"I don't know. Let go of me!" she screamed, trying to focus on the light, the power within, but it eluded her.

"Does he know? Do you know what you are, boy?"

Xander shifted, uneasy now. The air was fraught with tension.

"Shall I tell him? Tell him where his blood came from? Tell him what his blood is made of?"

"No, no!" she struggled, beating and kicking at Hector, but his arms clasped round her waist now, holding her to him. Her body began to glow as the fear welled up inside her, and Hector laughed again, exposing his sharpened fangs.

"Twice you have brought about the death of my brother," he said, looking at Xander over Selene's head. "And now I will kill you, despite the fact that you are my own flesh and blood."

"No!" Selene dragged the word out in an endless scream.

Hector pressed his lips to hers to silence her screams, but she continued shouting, twisting and turning her head away from him.

"What?" asked Xander, his body the only still thing in the building, which was burning about them, falling apart. Screams of dying Vampires echoed about the halls; the end was near.

"My son. Arthur's son. You are part Vampire. You are our flesh and blood. We created you when we took your mother over and over, back to front, one at a time, both at the same time. You were the product of our lovemaking!" His mouth twisted cruelly as he said the last words. "She screamed and screamed, the agony almost unbearable."

"No!" Now it was Xander's turn to shout, and he pulled his stake from his belt and rushed at Hector, thrashing through the air with the pointed wood.

Hector turned Selene so that her body was between them.

"Shoot him!" she shouted, raising her eyes to meet Xander.

"I'll kill you," he replied.

"You won't, you won't. Trust me," she said, as Hector raised a hand and squeezed at her throat.

"You would kill you own father?" asked Hector, growling through his bared fangs, inhaling Selene's scent, threatening to bite her and suck her immortal, silvered blood.

"Shoot him!" she screamed, as his fangs sank into her perfect flesh.

Xander raised his gun, his fingers trembling at the trigger, and let off a round of wooden bullets at close range, firing them through Selene's body, piercing her flesh with a hundred holes, piercing every organ, every life-giving element of her being.

She hung limp in Hector's arms, until those too fell limp, and together they fell to the floor in a lifeless heap.

"Selene, Selene!" Xander ran to her and dropped to his knees, pulling her off Hector's dead body, which even now was turning to dust and a dark bloody pool.

Her eyelids fluttered open. "You killed him," she whispered, her lips dry and immovable.

"What?" asked Xander, pressing his ear towards her face. "What did you say?"

"I said, you killed him. You won." She raised a frail hand to his face and stroked his cheek.

"But you, are you alright? Is it healing?" He began looking at her wounds, but the silver blood kept coming, running from her body.

"I'm immortal. I can't die," she whispered, but the pain she felt was real, and each breath was difficult.

"I love you, Selene," he whispered, raising her body, holding her tight against his chest. "Why aren't you healing?" He traced her wounds with his fingers. "God, what have I done? What have I done?"

His body began to tremble as he held her, and tears ran down his cheeks. Selene felt her own eyes dampen with silver tears as she watched him looking down on her, and she felt love blossom in her chest like a rose in the sunlight, opening its delicate petals to meet the heat that it need to survive.

"I love you, Xander. I've always loved you," she whispered, but Xander couldn't hear the words, obscured as they were by the sounds of blasts from elsewhere in the building. He pulled her closer, feeling the strength leave her body.

"I love you," she repeated, but the words choked in her throat as her viscous silver blood filled it, drowning her from the inside.

"Stay with me, Selene. Stay with me! Oh blood, blood..."

He kissed her neck and cheeks, her lips, but Selene had no strength to return his embrace.

"Immortal..." she whispered. "I was immortal. I cannot be killed by mortal hand..."

And then realisation dawned and she tried to sit up, tried to communicate the truth.

Xander was not mortal. Xander had slain her without even knowing that he could, and she had asked him to pull the trigger.

Tears filled her eyes, and she knew his face was the last thing she would ever see.

"You won," she whispered. "London is yours."

He nodded, kissing her again. "Don't leave me, Selene. Please."

"I love you," she whispered, and her eyes closed on the world that had borne her, and the man who had loved her.

The man who had killed her.

"I love you."
