9. warrior in charge

          home. when i think of home i see the white snow i covered in blood countless times. i see the queen i did everything for my whole life. i see the crowd that listened to my words over lexas. the place i haven't been since coming to join the last war. i let lexa, titus, and clarke know last night i will be going back but they didn't seem too amused. i break out of my train of thought as i hear knocking on the door
"(enter)"
"aspen we need to talk"
"then talk"
"why go back to azgeda? we need you here and roan is leading them"
"there is no need for me here and none of my people will accept a king who's been away for 3 years. and they'll turn on me next if i stay here much longer"
there is a brief silence before lexa speaks again
"at least wait until tomorrow, for ascension day to be over"
"i can do that for you lexa"
"thank you"
i nod my head and she leaves the room. not even 5 minutes pass before another knock is on my door
"(enter)"
"azgona"
he bows to me
"i apologize for intruding your personal time but there's something i must show you"
i give him a strange look but i have trust in titus
"lead the way"
he nods and starts walking. it doesn't take thing for me to notice we're headed to his chambers. and as he opens the door i see someone tied up
"(titus what is this?)"
"(he is from skaikru and he has somthing from becca pramheda)"
just those words caught my attention. titus showed me the item, that is our holy symbol. our most holy symbol. i quickly pull out my sword to his throat
"where did you get such thing with our holy symbol on it, sky boy"
"holy? it's a corporate logo"
"what does he mean titus?"
i put the sword down but titus gets to the boy with his hand around his neck now instead of my sword
"he's wrong. it is the sacred symbol of the commander to whom i've dedicated my life. now azgona asked you a question. how did you get it?"
"you're azgona?"
he stares at me in fear, he wasn't afraid with my sword to hit throat or titus hand wrapped around it but when he heard my name the fear had spread like wildfire
"that was not the question"
titus squeezes harder
"again, jaha gave it to me"
titus let go of him
"this would be chancellor jaha?"
"yes. he told me it was the key to the city of light and that if i swallowed it, the woman in red would take me there"
"the woman who's not a woman"
"yeah. that's right"
"what are you talking about?"
"she's a computer program, but i get that's hard for y'all to grasp, considering you pray to garbage, no offense, obviously."
"tell me more about this computer program that ended the world"
"come on. i don't have any details, okay? on the ark they just told us it was countries, politics. big surprise, they were wrong"
"and this is all you know?"
"yes!"
"(leave us titus)"
"(azgona i-)"
"(now)"
"(let me know if you need me)"
he bows his head down to me and exits his chambers
"i'm a bit lost here, can you tell me the story from the top"
and then he did. every detail he knew. but all i know is this Allie will be something very bad for my people if it reaches us. 
"what is your name?"
"murphy, you?"
"azgona"
"is that your real name or a nickname like everyone else in power has around here"
"it's my name to you. i'll see you around murphy"
"are you going to tell baldy to not kill me?"
"i like you, i'll tell him. give me a reason to regret that and i'll kill you myself"
"it's definitely a nickname"
"do you not understand kill you myself?"
"i'm not going to make you regret it"
"i already am"

i was true to my word and told titus not to kill the boy. now we are both standing by the throne while lexa talks
"we gather here on this ascension day to honor the commanders that came before me, those who live on within me as i will live on within one of you."
she will live on through ontari, she just doesn't know it. and i don't know what to do with this information murphy has given me. it's a problem for another day. today seems to have its own problems as i hear men shouting
"(heda! azgona! the flamekeeper promised we would be heard!)"
"titus what is this?"
lexa turns to him
"something you need to hear heda"
there was mumbling going around the crowd when the group of trikru started to bring someone to the front
"octavia"
clarke said looking terrified, octavia blake. i could sense the spirit of a warrior coming from that girl the moment i first saw. she's going to be something one day and i want her on my side when she is.
"(you're interrupting a very holy day, trikru)"
"(forgive me for intruding on this holy day commander. azgona. i am semet of trikru and i come seeking justice.)"
"(explain yourself. why do you hold octavia of skaikru prisoner?)"
lexa asks
"(she is prisoner of war, commander-)"
"(war?)"
"(yes azgona, i brought her here to bear witness to the crimes of her people)"
"what crimes? what happened?"
clarkes walked up to them asking then turned to Titus
"skaikru attacked their village."
"(tell me this isn't true)"
i look at titus with nothing but anger
"it is true, because their warriors were lost when your people massacred the army we had sent to protect you, their village was defenseless"
titus answers my question and semet begin talking again
"(please, commander. azgona. i beg you two. avenge us.)"
"(blood must have blood)"
"(death to skaikru)"
the crowd started chanting both
"(my quarters now!)"
and so that's where we went
"how dare you bring this to me on ascension day"
"i did not bring this here, heda. you did"
"he's right lexa"
"against azgona and i's advice, you made skaikru the 13th clan. they rejected this, murdering hundreds of your people, and yet on the very field where they died, you decided to forgive the killers, but this provocation is proof. blood must not have blood has failed. all that can stop this now is war."
"clarke?"
"don't ask her"
"her opinion in this matter is not exactly unbiased"
"they're right. i would do anything to save my people. you know that, but i know them. not everyone agrees with chancellor pike. kane doesn't. octavia doesn't-"
"your people did not vote for kane"
"some of them did. we need to give them time to see that they made the wrong choice and fix it"
"and you believe your people will take him out themselves"
she nods her head
"times out. they should have realized they made the wrong choice when he killed hundreds of our people"
"azgona is right, like usual. what if they used that time to plan their next attack, we must act now, heda. make an example of the 13th clan. show the other 12 what happens when they defy you. you got them back when you killed the ice queen but the coalition is still fragile."
"you'd kill the ice queen for your coalition but no sky person?"
"that was different"
"the only difference is clarke, you made your choice to my question. this is why i am going home, i'm done with this. i'm taking the control i've earned"
i walk to the throne room with everyone following me
"(attention heda hasn't been doing what needs to be done so i will)"
the whole crowd started to cheer
"i call upon the armies of the 12 clans to march on arkadia. but i do respect the title of commander so this is not a attack but it is a containment. we blockade them and keep them from everything they want. we starve them out and make them turn on each other. they'll kill each other from inside. and if any sky person crosses the line then you kill them. and you will, free octavia kom skaikru"
i nodded my head at her, everyone liked the part of them killing each other but no one liked anything else, and honestly i don't either but i'm not betraying lexa again
"once they kill their leader we will welcome them back as one of us"
lexa speaks up
"you heard azgona and the commander. send riders. tell your armies to set up a buffer zone around arkadia. 5 miles should be enough to keep them away from our villages."
"heda, i do not understand. how is vengeance?"
"it is not vengeance my brother, it is justice"
"azgona? how can you be okay with this"
"it is what our commander believes is best"
"skaikru killed my sons. and my brother. and my wife."
this pains me. it makes me want to go in there and slaughter them all myself.but i can't betray lexa again.
"if the spirit of the commander will not protect us, and azgona will not kill for us, then how do we survive?"
"you mind yourself, semet"
"(death to the commander!)"
he screamed, pulled a knife out of his pants and turns to run at lexa. but i stop him. kick his leg down, grabbing his hair before cutting his head off. i then turn to lexa head in hand. i throw it at her and say my last words to her before i walk out
"(blood must have blood)"

i have been packing my things that my guards have brought me over my stay for quiet some time now
"(Zeus take this to the guards and send them home. tell them we leave before the sun goes below the trees)
"(yes azgona)"
he bows to me and we both leave but i run into octavia
"azgona"
she bows to me
"octavia, is there something i can help you with"
"i'm just trying to find indra"
"she hasn't been the same since your people killed her army, you'll find her on the streets in her hut."
"thank you, and thank you for telling them to release me"
"i may hate your people but not you octavia, if you every need a place your welcome in azgeda"
she bows her head to me and says
"thank you"
before leaving. i continue my walk before hearing screams
"i'm sorry lexa, i didn't mean to offend you."
and the yelling went quiet. i knock on the door once i heard the conversation end
"(enter)"
"(titus can we have a moment)"
"(of course azgona)"
he leaves and it is just lexa and me
"did you change your mind about leaving?"
"did you change your mind about blood must have blood?"
"no i have not"
"then neither have i, i leave before dark. i just wanted to come talk to you first"
"about what"
"just talk to talk . i don't plan on coming back for a while"
"and why is that"
"i can't stay here keeping my mouth shut pretending like i support what you're doing and lose my ways"
"ways change"
"mine don't"
"you killed your own sister and you believe you don't need to change?"
i took my sword out and placed it on her throat
"(do not bring up costia!) i did what i had too, you should learn from me"
"(if killing family means being like you i want to be nothing like you azgona)"
"you don't need to kill family, you killed yourself by changing your ways"
"you want to kill me? do it"
she stepped closer to my sword
"i will not kill you, that's why i'm leaving. i want to kill skaikru but i will not betray you again"
she nods and i lower my sword
"after there is peace i hope our relationship can grow aspen "
"if there is peace, someone has killed me. i live for war and you know it"
"there's so much more to life then fighting, there's love-"
"love will kill you"
"then so be it. you have not lived if you have not loved"
"i seem to be doing fine without love"
"nothing about you is fine. you kill just to kill. you start a war because you're afraid you'll have nothing to do if there is no fight. what kind of life is that"
"the life of a warrior in charge"
"you are not in charge here"
"i just gave all 12 clans a kill order on skaikru and they sent riders to get their armies. if you don't think i have control here you better stop staring at clarke and focus on the big picture"
"it's true our people follow you but you need to learn to lead right before you lead at all"
"there's nothing wrong with how i lead"
"aspen. i want you to promise me to honor my coalition when i die"
"you know i can't do that"
"one day you'll see how much we need skaikru. how much we all need each other"
"they better hope so"

a/n: this chapter is already crazy long soooo lexas death is next chapter. i'm terrified to write it because i don't know how i want aspens role to play out with the city of light.. hope y'all enjoy!
